Match report SWEPT ASIDE BY BROOMFIELD

It was back down to earth with a bump for Purleigh, not at the races today against opponents fresh from Division 1 last season.

Purleigh did at least win the toss, and batting first seemed a decent enough idea on a sunny day and good-looking pitch. But Broomfield's bowlers were probing accurately from the start, giving nothing away. One by one, the Purleigh batters were mopped up, and it quickly became a procession to and from the pavilion, as nobody could stay with the skipper. Purleigh slipped to 44 for 7 before drinks, well on the way to being cleaned up. Chris and Martin gave some resistance but the inevitable happened as Ed only lasted three balls and might as well have been batting with a broomstick, out for 0 leaving poor Wes stranded without facing a single delivery, Purleigh scrubbed out for a paltry 66 in 27 overs.

Broomfield's reply was brutal, a no-nonsense biffing of the runs required in just 5.1 overs, poor Wes bowling just one ball. Pointless Purleigh had received a lesson in bowling and batting, although the visitors might want to brush up on the law regarding a completed catch before tossing the ball away.

So we dust ourselves down, spruce up, and return next week with a clean slate to do better.
