Match report
PURLEIGH BEAT GREAT WAKERING AND THE WEATHER
With heavy rain forecast for late afternoon, the Purleigh brains trust had worked out a plan: field first, rattle the opposition out, knock off the runs, go home dry. Toss duly won, the first step was put in place.
A pitch covered overnight was not initially helpful to the bowlers and Purleigh had to work hard for wickets. Jai Patel got one in the 7th over with the help of an excellent catch by Mark Rynn at midwicket, 28 for 1. A big breakthrough came in the 15th over, a double-wicket maiden for first-change bowler Martin Owers, including top batsman Smith, castled by a jaffa for a four-ball duck. Another vital strike came in the 28th over after sustained pressure from bowlers Freegard and Owers, when the skipper held a stinging caught and bowled to remove opener Frankel for 65, 99 for 4. Ranjan Gulati and Alex Reeves manfully shared the fifth bowlers' nine overs with two successes for Alex, as wickets continued to fall after the 5th wicket partnership was broken at 144 for 5. 147 for 6 became 154 for 7 after 38 overs. Chris Freegard hit the stumps three times in the 42nd over to end the innings on 165 all out, which looked a chasable total if the weather held.
No rain had arrived by the end of the tea interval, but the Purleigh reply soon began to wobble as Josh Taylor and Mark Rynn both holed out for 1, leaving Purleigh 23 for 2 after 8 overs. Ranjan showed great promise in a partnership of 55 with the captain, but was then bowled for 23. 81 for 3 became 91 for 4, 102 for 5 and 103 for 6 as nerves jangled in the gathering gloom. 113 for 6 at drinks marked the arrival of increasingly heavy rain, but with both sides eyeing victory the easy option of abandoning the match was not taken, to the credit of both captains. Chris Freegard and Jai Patel gave it some welly after drinks, hitting the remaining 53 runs needed in 5.1 overs, just in time before the rain absolutely bucketed down, and we all got wet anyway just going back to the car park.
