Match report
THINGS ARE LOOKING ROSY IN THE PURLEIGH GARDEN
The annual trip to Eastwood saw Purleigh put in to bat on a damp-looking green-top after a watering by overnight rain. The innings started to bloom early as openers Freegard and Taylor drilled bad balls to the boundary and kept the good ones out, both hitting a six before the skipper fell uncharacteristically early, skying one to be caught for 24 at the start of the 8th over, 44 for 1. Mark Rynn and Melvin John, who showed early promise, were next to go while Taylor took root at the crease, 80 for 3 in the 16th over. Eventually, Josh tickled the leggy to the keeper, out for a well-made 52, the major thorn in Eastwood's side. At 98 for 4, it could have gone either way, but the remaining batsmen dug deep, Jordan Oliver's season starting to blossom with a brisk 33 and the evergreen Steve Rynn a responsible 30. Useful short knocks from Martin Owers (16), Jai Patel (14) and Matt Oliver (11), helped the innings flower to 207 all out, a decent score in the conditions.
The Eastwood reply was slow to germinate in the face of the Purleigh squeeze, which stemmed the flow of runs straight away. Matt Oliver, returning from cricketing paternity leave after the birth of Rosalie, took the first wicket, a catch smartly held by Jordan Oliver at mid off, 7 for 1 from 6 overs. The number 3 smashed a four first ball off Jai Patel, but slashed his second to Taylor at slip who held a sharp catch. The other opener was eventually suckered into a nick to the keeper off Matt Oliver. At 42 for 3 in the sixteenth over, Eastwood had lost early wickets and fallen behind the run rate, the seeds of destruction having been sown. When the wily Shahid came on to bowl, the Purleigh tendrils strangled further, reducing the home side to 94 for 8 in the 29th over, game effectively over after three Shahid wickets. Jai Patel wrapped up the innings 5 overs later, Eastwood 119 all out, Purleigh taking the winner's rosette by 88 runs to make it four out of four so far.
