Match report
PURLEIGH KEEP THE FAITH AT HIGH EASTER
A good day was had by all as Purleigh started the season at the picturesque High Easter ground, welcoming Dan Oliver's mate Martin Owers to the team, simultaneously strengthening the batting, bowling and fielding. Chris Freegard won the toss and chose to bat first in warm sunshine. A watchful start with Josh Taylor saw Purleigh reach 41 in the 8th over when a powerful Taylor strike was plucked from the air by opposition skipper Gliddon, caught for 17 from 21 balls. Freegard had passed fifty by the time Dan Oliver was bowled for 16 by one that kept low, 106 for 2. Melvin John added 42 in partnership with the captain, who was well held on the boundary having made 82 (79 balls) out of 148 in 27 overs. Jordan Oliver unfortunately followed lbw next ball but then another good partnership was established between Melvin and Steve Rynn, Melvin stumped for 65 (61 balls) with 8 overs to go, 223 for 5. Steve completed his fifty (41 balls) but was next out at 259 with three overs left, which produced twenty more runs, mostly singles as the boundary was by now well protected. 279 for 8 in 45 looked a defendable score, with a feeling it could have been more tempered by the fact that we had at least four let-offs as holdable catches were dropped.
After tea the weather had changed and Purleigh bowled in cooler, overcast conditions. A wicket in Matt Oliver's first over sent back the normally prolific Brisland, well caught high at the wicket off a thin but audible bottom edge. Purleigh had to work hard for the next wicket, opener Jackson superbly caught in the deep by Jordan Oliver, as usual our best fielder of the day. 90 for 2 became 106 for 3 when opposition keeper Cleverley left his heel in the air and was stumped for 43 off the bowling of Freegard. Purleigh looked on top when Martin Owers bowled Abbasi for 2, 111 for 4 off 25 overs, but High Easter upped their run rate with some big hits, Gliddon eventually trying one too many, chopping a Dan Oliver delivery on to the stumps, bowled for 44, 165 for 5 in the 36th over. Two more quick-scoring partnerships now had the home side on the brink of victory with 18 runs needed from 19 balls, but Purleigh held their nerve to see a calamitous and needless run out break the spell, heaping the pressure on to one batsman who promptly fell to an excellent yorker from Jai Patel in the 43rd over. The tailenders could only find five singles from the remaining 14 balls, tightly bowled by Jai and Dan, to leave the persistent Purleigh side winners of a tight game by 12 runs after a quality game of cricket that went the full 90 overs.
