Match report
PROMOTED PURLEIGH PLAYERS PARTY AT PIZZA PALACE
Actually, they celebrated at the Basildon Pizza Hut, having won promotion by beating Basildon & Pitsea 2nd XI at Mopsies Park, after missing out in the last game of both previous seasons.
Minus the Rynn brothers, Purleigh might have been forced to field a weakened team but for the timely intervention of the very-keen-for-promotion Dan Oliver, who pulled out the stops to arrange not only for competent cricketer David Pike, but also (amazingly) former Essex pro Robert Rollins, to turn out for Purleigh.
Another good toss to lose saw Purleigh bowl first on a green but dry wicket. And a cracking start was made as the home side played their shots but were reduced to 36 for 7 after 16 overs and a short game looked likely with 3 wickets each for Jai Patel and Matt Oliver plus a direct-hit run out from Chris Freegard. Perhaps the gamble backfired in keeping both opening bowlers on for their full 9 overs as Basildon dug in as the ball softened, reaching 109 before Freegard broke through, bowling an experienced no.9 bat in the 36th over. 3 runs later, some nifty footwork from Josh Taylor, who kicked the ball from short cover back to bowler Freegard, enabling the run out of youthful opener D. Gray for a mature 51, ended Basildon's resistance, the innings closing when Ed Oliver held on to a gloved lifter at 121 after 39.3 overs.
Chasing a larger total than seemed likely at one point, any pressure was eased as openers Freegard and Taylor put on 45 in 8.1 overs before the skipper was out lbw for 18. Dan Oliver was well caught for 8 after two meaty fours, and Josh followed for 41 at 77 for 3 inside 15 overs. Jordan Oliver (11 not out) kept new boy Pike (38 not out) company to see Purleigh home shortly after drinks, giving poor Rob Rollins a 'thanks for coming', but securing a crucial win. Rob seemed to enjoy the Purleigh experience enough to partake in pizza, or maybe he needed a lift home from Dan, but it would be great to see him back next year.
Thanks again to our band of supporters this season, it is much appreciated and we hope to be competitive in division three next year.
