Match report THE CURSE OF BENTLEY STRIKES AGAIN

Following Purleigh's successful visit to Bentley last year, this season's game reverted to the 2022 model, as Purleigh again turned up with a weakened bowling attack, lost the toss, and had to field first on a hot day with a very fast outfield.

Purleigh duly conceded 314 runs, having managed the first half of the innings quite well despite some missed chances, Bentley reaching drinks (22 overs) on 101, albeit with no wickets taken on the flat pitch. Unfortunately the second half exposed the lack of a fifth regular bowler, let alone the luxury of a sixth, as Bentley powered on, scoring 213 in the next 23 overs, again aided by several wasteful drops and mis-fields.

A good start to the Purleigh innings was needed, but it did not materialise as Josh Taylor was bowled at the end of the second over. No partnerships of note followed, the highest being 30 with wickets falling regularly as Purleigh at least tried to chase the total. A quick and entertaining 21 (14 balls) from Melvin John, 44 from Chris Freegard, and 55 from Andy Bowles accounted for most of Purleigh's runs. The game was long gone by the time Shahid took guard, but he enjoyed himself anyway in making an unbeaten 41, almost securing a fourth batting point, negotiating the last 10.1 overs with Ed Oliver, who fought a gritty but ultimately futile and boring rearguard action with a 29-ball 1 not out to deny Bentley the satisfaction of a final bowling point, failing to take all ten wickets as Purleigh finished on 192 for 9 after 45 overs.
