Match report PURLEIGH PARTY ON FOR ANOTHER WEEK

It was a batsmans' day at Purleigh v. Stock as 539 runs were scored while only ten wickets fell - with a backdrop of booming party music coming from a local house all afternoon.

Chris Freegard won the toss at the captains' get-together, and wisely chose to bat. Festivities began with another excellent opening partnership between the skipper and Josh Taylor, 75 scored in 13 overs before Taylor holed out. Dan Oliver and Mark Rynn each made 2, and at 93 for 3 in 20 overs the innings was in danger of a blow-out. But Jordan Oliver hung around with Chris to score 10 in a useful partnership of 55, 148 for 4 in 30 overs. Then the beanfeast began, as party-animal Andy Bowles in a rare appearance again proved that class is permanent, hitting 60 not out (9 fours, 2 sixes) in a shindig with Freegard, who raved on to an unbeaten 162 (21 fours, 6 sixes), Purleigh ending their bash on 284 for 4, with the visitors deflated and perhaps wishing they hadn't been invited.

After a leisurely tea-party Stock began their reply, racing out of the blocks with no ice-breaker necessary, reaching 46 in 7 overs before the first wicket fell, Melvin John grazing the stumps. Another quick 50 partnership ended when Steve Rynn held a towering steepler to see off dangerous opener Usmani, 97 for 2. When Freegard bowled another big hitter, Wallis, for 9, Purleigh seemed on top. A fighting, but ultimately too slow partnership of 116 between Ashraf (36) and Stratton (87 n.o.) kept Stock in the game until Dan Oliver, with a party bag of in-dippers and outswingers, deservedly picked up three quick wickets as the overs ticked down, the visitors falling short by 29 runs.

So the Purleigh lads were able to enjoy an after-party knees-up at the Fox and Hounds, still hopeful of bigger end-of-season celebrations - but this is Purleigh, so beware of party-poopers!
