Match report
PURLEIGH RETURN TO WINNING WAYS
A long trip to Shalford CC to play Chelmsford Titans saw a much improved Purleigh performance.
A good toss to lose saw Purleigh asked to bowl first on a pitch freshened by morning rain and with an interesting ramp at one end. Jai Patel found that ramp, nicking off an opener with his seventh ball, Ed Oliver holding a regulation catch. It could have got even better two balls later, as Jai again found the edge, this time of Titans trump card Linga, who tried to pull a lifter that wasn't short enough, but the veteran keeper couldn't hang on as the ball flew high to the right. Due to technological failure, details of the rest of the innings are sketchy, but Linga made the most of his let-off, plus a couple of others, to score 51 in a big second wicket partnership before being bowled by Dan Oliver when a big total for the home side looked likely. But this opened the floodgates as much of the middle-order fell to shot-a-ball cricket, slumping to 144 for 7. A cameo of 33 from no.9 Mallik saw Titans to 195 all out, momentum having shifted from Titans back to Purleigh, ending somewhere in between. Dan Oliver, 4 for 39, and Jai Patel, 3 for 25 were the pick of the bowlers.
Purleigh openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor knocked off 95 of the runs in 17.3 overs before Taylor was bowled by Zafar for 52. The same bowler saw off Dan Oliver and Mark Rynn to raise Titan's hopes. Jordan Oliver returned to form with a longer stay at the crease, scoring 17 in a partnership of 49. At 154 for 5 after 34 overs, the experienced Melvin John biffed a quick 22 to take Purleigh right up to the finish line. It was left to Steve Rynn (4 n.o.) and Freegard (79 n.o.) to secure the points for Purleigh in some degree of comfort.
