Match report
PURLEIGH SPLASHDOWN HARD AGAINST GREAT WAKERING
On the 55th anniversary of man first walking on the moon, the Purleigh team rendezvoused in the hope of taking one small step towards promotion.
A hot day, with the sun god Apollo in the ascendency and the mercury rising, saw Great Wakering win the toss and they had no hesitation in batting first, apart from a long countdown waiting for Purleigh to take the field. It was a smooth lift-off for the bowlers, with Wakering falling to 5 for 2 after 3 overs, then batting carefully to reach 56 for 2 at 15 overs. At 141 for 4 from 30 overs, Purleigh were in a good position to really make the grade, but Wakering's big hitters moved to warp speed, hitting 96 from the last 10 overs to put their innings into orbit, rocketing to 260 for 9 at the end.
It was clear that the Purleigh batting would need to make a giant leap to win the game, but a poor start did not help to leave the launch pad. With Taylor, Dan Oliver, Steve Rynn (32) and mission commander Freegard out within 16.1 overs with 73 on the board, it was clear that Purleigh had a problem. At 92 for 6 the landscape seemed heavily cratered and it was time to prime the parachutes. But Melvin John, after feeling ill at tea, collected some protein pills from ground control (actually Ibuprofen capsules from Ed Oliver's scoring pencil case), put his helmet on, switched to auxiliary mode and tried his best to change things in a most peculiar way. 58 from 28 balls, including 51 from 15 balls, gave everyone a buzz and was a highly entertaining innings taking the score to 141, but with a lack of contributions from the rest of the crew it was not enough, and the innings crash-landed for 155 in the 30th over.
Onward and upward to next week's visit to Eastwood, and a chance to re-ignite the engines and prove that Purleigh's cricketers are made of the Right Stuff.
