Stock 2 v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 08 Jun 2024 at 13.00
Purleigh CC Won by ten runs

Match report A TENSE MATCH ENDS WITH ANOTHER PURLEIGH WIN

It was back to the familiar blueprint as Purleigh won the toss and chose to bat first in an away game at Stock CC. Things went off-plan early as Chris Freegard proved that he is human when a slightly loose shot resulted in him being bowled for 9 at the start of the fourth over. Dan Oliver and Josh Taylor proceeded carefully before Taylor was bowled for 6, 53 for 2 in the thirteenth over. Melvin John fell lbw at 64 for 3, but Dan and Jordan Oliver consolidated on a tricky wicket in overcast conditions, adding 58 together until Dan was caught for 71 off 81 balls, exactly the same score and run-rate as his previous Purleigh innings. Useful contributions from Jordan (29) and Steve Rynn (27) were ended by great catches. Shahid chipped in with 20 not out including a couple of vital late sixes, as Purleigh reached 197 for 7 in 45 overs, a respectable score in the circumstances but the door was ajar for Stock.

After a pleasant tea in the sunshine, as the weather conditions changed, Purleigh began their defence. Opener Usmani raced out of the blocks, hitting 41 in 13 scoring shots before his luck ran out aiming for a fourth six and he was well caught on the boundary by Melvin John, 52 for 1 in 8 overs. That fast start gave Stock a great chance to win, but a mini-collapse followed as the scoring rate plummeted, Rich Cory and Mark Stratton both caught off loose shots, 56 for 3 off 11 overs. Purleigh looked on top with the big guns out, but the Stock middle and late order played a strong hand, while super catching and a needless run-out chipped away at the wickets. A big-hitting seventh wicket partnership of 57 took Stock, at 182 for 6 with 6 overs left, to the brink of victory, but now it was Purleigh's turn to hang in there, knowing that a wicket or two would change everything. Sure enough, Wallis was undone lbw by one that kept low, and one run later at 183, Mayhook was caught one-handed on the boundary by skipper Freegard, the ball popping up nicely from his first attempt. Another plumb lbw left Stock 186 for 9 (credit to the umpires for raising the finger when some teams may have wrongly hesitated) but a couple of boundaries could still do it. Happily for Purleigh, an attempt to hit one resulted in a leading edge flying high to short mid-wicket, where Freegard safely claimed the caught and bowled with no repeat of the previous week's mix-up. 187 all out, Purleigh won by ten runs with seventeen balls left.
