Match report
PURLEIGH TRUNDLE ON
Another lost toss saw Purleigh batting first, this week on a lovely-looking brown track that disguised the inevitable fact that it was a bit damp underneath after another rainy week.
The wickets of Josh Taylor and Steve Rynn had fallen by the time the score was 34 after 9 overs, which clearly buoyed the keen Eastwood team. But they had quietened down long before the next wicket fell in the 40th over, Chris Freegard caught on the boundary for 125 from 123 balls, 21 fours after another relentless knock. The skipper and Mark Rynn had taken the wind out of Eastwood's sails in a partnership of 159 runs, Rynn using all his experience to accumulate runs while blunting the bowling attack. Jai Patel and Mark added 35 in the last five overs to take the home side to a healthy 238 for 4 at the close of the innings, on a pitch where 180 or 190 might have seemed enough. Mark ended on 54 not out, a very valuable nitty-gritty innings for his team.
After tea, it was time to apply the Purleigh squeeze, again effective as each bowler and fielder fulfilled their respective role in the field. An early wicket for Jai Patel, and good pressure from everyone else, saw Eastwood fall further and further behind the required run-rate, and it never looked like they could match the Purleigh batting performance despite being only 2 wickets down after 27 overs, but with only 91 runs on the board. Josh Taylor usefully filled in a bowling spot, sending down seven overs for 36 runs and was only hit for one boundary, the batters not tempted to go for as many big hits as they probably should have. A double-wicket 28th over from the evergreen Shahid added further scoreboard pressure, with skipper Freegard repeating the feat in the 32nd, to leave Eastwood 105 for 7. Jai Patel again bowled well at the tail, taking 2 wickets for 1 run in his last 3 overs, and this week it was Shahid's turn to take the final wicket, Jordan Oliver completing his second catch, Eastwood all out for 119 in 39.2 overs.
Four wins in a row represents an excellent start to the season, hopefully all four wheels will stay on the Purleigh wagon.
