Purleigh CC Won by four wickets

Match report RIDING HIGH AT HIGH RODING

An unusually strong-looking Purleigh side assembled at High Roding for the first game of the season, as chief selector Steve Rynn could not find a place for himself in the team. As it turned out, it was a good job there were some big guns in the batting.

Purleigh won the toss and elected to bowl on a green wicket after a rainy week with many games lost to the weather. Pressure was immediately applied with a zippy Jai Patel maiden, then a good low slip catch by Josh Taylor in Matt Oliver's first over, in which he gave the keeper a torrid time, forcing the gloveman to stand back for the rest of the spell. That decision was rewarded with a lovely outswinger nicked into the gloves, 19 for 2 after 6 overs. A sharp Brad Barrick catch brought Matt a third wicket, 26 for 3 which became 26 for 4 next over when Melvin John nipped one back to hit off stump after the batsman chose wrongly out of the two types of leave. Melvin and Matt shared the wickets to rock High Roding at 51 for 8, aided by a worldie of a catch in the deep by Jordan Oliver that could have gone viral on social media had the home side's video recording been switched on. Jai Patel and Wesley John cleaned up the tail, High Roding bowled out for a seemingly low score of 70 in 24 overs.

Perhaps softened up by the rare treat of a proper cricket tea, the Purleigh reply began badly with the loss of Josh Taylor to the fifth ball, although the skipper had already accumulated 5 runs. Dan Oliver mis-hit a short ball to midwicket for 2, 29 for 2. Mark Rynn got a golden, 30 for 3 but while Chris Freegard was at the crease there were no jangling nerves - until the skipper duly wafted at a wide one and nicked off at 32 for 4, leaving a rebuilding job for Jordan Oliver and Brad Barrick, who saw off Roding's opening bowler after a top spell of 9 overs, 4 for 16. Jordan perished at 51, and Jai Patel at 63, both caught off mis-timed shots, as Purleigh edged closer to a win. The experienced heads of Barrick and the senior John saw their side over the line, but it was 21.2 overs of heavy going - nevertheless, a win is a win, and a good start to the season.
