SQUEAKY-BUM TIME AGAIN AT PURLEIGH
A strong-looking Purleigh side assembled at the playing field to take on Bentley 2nd XI. Another successful toss allowed the skipper to bat first in the sunshine, albeit on a slightly damp wicket after morning rain showers.
A steady start saw 34 added before the first wicket fell in the 9th over, Josh Taylor caught at point for 12. Mark Rynn soon followed, as did Andy Bowles, leaving Purleigh 38 for 3 in the 14th over. Jai Patel kept Purleigh's trump-card Chris Freegard company for a while before he was lbw for 9 at the end of the 20th over, Purleigh on the back foot at 68 for 4. But Steve Rynn used his years of experience to bat sensibly and stay with the captain for the next 20 overs taking the score to 175 before he found a new way to get out, hitting the wicket with his backside attempting a ramp shot. By now Chris had reached 103 not out, and with Melvin John, put on 42 for the 6th wicket before falling in the last over in search of a fifth batting point, bowled for 127 (17 fours, 2 sixes), in the process passing 1,000 runs in his 11th innings. To avoid jinxing things, full statistics will follow at the end of the season but for now let's just say that today's big innnings actually caused a very small fall in the average! Four swings and misses from Shahid could not gain the final bonus point and Purleigh ended on a respectable 218 for 7 against a good bowling attack, Melvin 16 not out, Matt Oliver 1 not out.
After tea, Bentley's openers made a steady start, always on the look-out for a quick single or the chance to turn one into two, also putting away the occasional loose delivery. It took 17 overs and two bowling changes to register anything in the wickets column, but as is often the case one brought two when Jai bowled Rawlinson for 26, then Shahid had Gordon well caught behind, 70 for 2 in the 18th over. 88 for 2 at drinks left Bentley plenty to do later and a 50-partnership for the 3rd wicket kept them in the hunt. Vitally, quick-scoring JP Cruz-Rocha was next out at 121 for 3, brilliantly caught by the leaping salmon known as Steve Rynn, although a local seismic monitor may have detected something too. 125-4 soon became 139-5 in the 35th over, as the odds of a win swung towards the home side. Notably, the Purleigh brains trust had by now given Josh Taylor a bowl, knowing that it would be hard to hit slow bowling away. Josh actually produced a ripper for that 5th wicket, turning one from leg to hit the top of the off stump. Now the tension mounted as youngsters Hammond and Hunter built a good partnership of 49, again exposing Purleigh's slow fielding with some excellent running, taking Bentley to 185 with 5 overs left, seven an over to win. But Jai Patel, brought back to bowl at the death, got it just right, bowling two batsmen with well-pitched-up deliveries in the 41st over as the opposition strove for boundaries when they could have won playing tip-and-run. With 24 needed from the last three overs and a set batter still there, Jai bowled another good set for the 43rd, conceding just three runs with a run-out by Matt Oliver throwing from the boundary and another clean bowled. 21 from two overs with the last pair batting became 14 needed from the last, still achievable until Jai clipped the leg stump first ball, picking up a well-deserved fifth wicket, Purleigh the winners by thirteen runs. Once again, the low bowling extras count (4), proved important in a tight game.
