Match report WEATHER THE WINNER AT WET WAKERING

Under grey skies and with a forecast of imminent heavy rain at Great Wakering, skipper Chris Freegard won the toss and the birthday boy rewarded himself with the opportunity to bat.

The first scoring shot of the Purleigh innings was a big Freegard six, fourth ball. This set the tone for an opening partnership of 46 in ten overs, before Josh Taylor was caught for 17 having been missed earlier off one easy dolly and one more tricky chance. Mark Rynn helped the skipper add 39 but was bowled for 5, 85 for 2 after 17 overs. A flying edge, gleefully held by the keeper at the second attempt, saw Freegard out for 62 having hit 7 fours and 3 sixes. Brad Barrick fell in the same over, and at 95 for 4 Wakering looked the team more likely to pick up a decent haul of bonus points, bravely playing on despite continuous rain and a chilly breeze. Jordan Oliver and Jai Patel added 19 before drinks, 114 for 4. Perhaps the carrot of a batting point at 125 coaxed the pair back out to the middle where they kept the momentum up, adding 52 inside ten overs to gain two points and put Purleigh into a much stronger position. But reality hit home and everybody knew it was too wet to continue when Jai's bat slipped out of his hands and flew down the track as he played his shot. The players came off at 166 for 4 in 32.4 overs, having stuck it out for a lot longer than all the other teams in the division, match abandoned with ten points each.
