Basildon and Pitsea 2 v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 08 Jul 2023 at 1 pm
Purleigh CC Won by seven wickets

Match report NO FLOPSIES AT MOPSIES FOR PURLEIGH

Normal service was resumed today as Purleigh welcomed the return of skipper Chris Freegard, and duly produced a comfortable win against Basildon and Pitsea 2nds at Mopsies Park.

With a full-strength bowling line-up and a green wicket, the captain felt confident in fielding first. Melvin John and Matt Oliver applied a useful Purleigh squeeze, conceding only 28 runs in the first ten overs, albeit without taking a wicket despite several edges and aerial shots that did not go to hand. Father and son openers S & E Noble almost made it to drinks - due to the vagueness of the oppo scorebook it is hard to be exact but the first wicket fell at 62 and drinks were taken at 78 for 1 after 23 overs. A short spell after the interval reduced Basildon to 97 for 5 with Melvin hitting the stumps three times in two overs. The home side recovered to 155 without ever being allowed to run away with the score, before a smart throw from keeper Ed Oliver to the bowlers end ran out the no. 7 bat for 26 in the 40th over, then Ed's second 'special' leg-side stumping of the season removed the no. 3 bat for 56 at 163 in the 42nd, meaning that Basildon were able to limp to a third batting point but not much further, finishing on 177 for 8 from their 45 overs.

The hot, humid afternoon had taken its toll on some of the Purleigh players, but it was now time to dig deep and bat for the win on a wicket that had displayed some uneven bounce of both low and high variety. Openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor raced out of the blocks, adding 39 before Taylor was caught for a useful 23 in the 5th over. The skipper quickly added most of the next 38 runs before Andy Bowles was caught for 4, hampered by an injury suffered earlier when diving in vain to stop a boundary. Using all his experience to sum up the situation and play accordingly, Steve Rynn saw Purleigh to drinks at 119 for 2, Freegard 69 not out (having reached his 50 in the 14th over), Rynn 19 not out. The tempo slowed slightly after drinks as good balls were defended but bad ones were still dispatched, and Purleigh sailed serenely towards the target, only losing Rynn for 30 to perhaps a needless run out when the job was almost done at 173, with Freegard now 103 not out. Jordan Oliver delivered the coup-de-grace and the lads decamped to Bas Vegas for a well-deserved pizza.
