Match report
PURLEIGH'S PART-TIMERS PRODUCE PRICELESS PERFORMANCES
Lacking two regular bowlers to face Boreham & Roxwell, the Purleigh line-up this week sported a different father and son partnership in Melvin and Wes John, and also marked a league debut for 16 year-old Mason Barber, who sat patiently in his pads for 45 overs waiting for a bat that didn't materialise, but unperturbed, contributed a valuable fielding performance including a vital catch in a pressure situation.
Skipper Chris Freegard again won the toss and chose to bat, this time opening the innings with veteran club President Dave 'Geezer' Bowles. Despite a heavy previous day on the champers at Lords', Geeze bravely saw some of the shine off the new ball in 6 overs before falling lbw, 19 for 1. Josh Taylor joined the captain and played his best knock for some time, including an entertaining three aided by a buzzer and more twos than he would have wanted, contributing 52 (7 fours) in a partnership of 149, guiding the team past drinks before being bowled in the 30th over, 168 for 2. Freegard reached a fourth ton in five innings two overs later eventually falling for 118 (16 fours, 2 sixes) in the 35th over with the score on 197. A solid innings from Jordan Oliver (23 not out), saw Purleigh safely to maximum batting points ending on 242 for 7 (45 overs).
Taking the field after tea, the Purleigh players knew the importance of a good start, as it was likely that part-time bowlers would have to fill in for 18 overs. Melvin John and Jai Patel duly delivered, reducing Boreham to 19 for 4 in the 7th over, Patel forcing the dangerous O'Halloran to chop on in his first over, then seeing keeper Ed Oliver safely pouch sharp chances in each of his next two sets. Melvin induced another chop-on before Boreham rallied, with new players batting properly to add a partnership of 115 for the fifth wicket, at the same time keeping in touch with the run-rate beyond the drinks interval. But now the Purleigh part-timers dug deep with important and tidy spells from Wes John and Jordan Oliver. Josh Taylor broke the partnership by turning one past the advancing batter for a stumping on the way to figures of 9 overs, 3 for 38. With capable batter Dom Kempster at the crease partnering well-set number three Linga, Purleigh needed to hold their nerve, which Mason Barber certainly did when safely catching a looping top edge to remove Kempster for just two runs. Mason, with his confidence noticeably boosted, proceeded to make several brave and important stops fielding 'round the corner' as Purleigh managed to dry up the boundaries. Meanwhile, Linga reached his hundred but with sensible marshalling of the bowling resources by skipper Freegard and the Purleigh Brains' Trust, it was left to the returning opening bowlers to bowl at the death and mop up the tail, first Jai hitting the stumps before Melvin delivered victory with a bamboozling dipping and swinging ball that accounted for the normally limpet-like veteran Ken Greenaway, Purleigh winning by 40 runs.
To quote Marlene Freegard: ' A real good game today, the whole team were excellent, thoroughly enjoyed it'. Let's hope for more of the same next week.
