Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI v Great Wakering 1 on Sat 20 May 2023 at 1 pm
Purleigh CC Won by 44 runs

Match report IT'S A FUNNY OLD GAME

Despite winning the toss and choosing to bat on a hard and dry track that promised plenty of runs, the normal Purleigh blueprint for success was binned early as the home side slumped to 15 for 4 after 7.1 overs in the face of some quality bowling from Great Wakering. Skipper Chris Freegard was uncharacteristically out for a duck in the first over, but never mind - he still averages 126 this season. That wicket was swiftly followed by the losses of Mark Rynn, Josh Taylor and Brad Barrick to leave Purleigh reeling. Jordan Oliver and Jai Patel repaired some of the damage adding 34 for the fifth wicket before Jordan became the fourth batter to be out clean bowled. Melvin John and Jai had added another 34 when Melvin was bowled shortly after drinks in the 26th over, 83 for 6. Steve Rynn and extras pushed the score above 100 but the tail failed to wag, Purleigh all out for a disappointing 104 in the 34th over. But credit should go to the seven bowlers used by Wakering, none of whom were a pushover, well-supported by their 13-year-old wicketkeeper, a mere 50 years the junior of the Purleigh gloveman - is this a record?

Part two of the blueprint, the Purleigh squeeze in the field, was more successful than part one, as inroads were made into the batting order with a superb pick-up and direct hit run out by Brad Barrick followed by a Melvin John yorker to remove the number 3, 28 for 2. A second run out when skipper Freegard exocetted a throw from the boundary and a sharp-eyed stumping off Mattt Oliver's bowling to give him a much-deserved wicket made it 32 for 4 and the pressure was piling back on to the visitors. A great catch by the skipper and a top yorker from Jai Patel to dismiss the dangerous Holman was enough to expose the opposition tail at 52 for 7. To their credit Purleigh did not let up in the field, taking the last 3 wickets for just 8 further runs, Great Wakering 60 all out, Purleigh winning by 44. And all this when on a day that looked favourable for batting, ten wickets in the low-scoring match were out 'bowled' and three lbw, surely a good advertisement for aiming at the target.
