Match report THE PURLEIGH BLUEPRINT FOR SUCCESS COMES GOOD AGAIN

What is the blueprint for success you may ask? For Purleigh Cricket Club it is to bat first with a ton from the skipper making the basis of a good score around solid contributions from the others, then to apply the 'Purleigh squeeze' in the field with tight opening bowling and early wickets from Matt Oliver and Melvin John respectively. Add in some mind games during the week when Josh Taylor put a fear of fast bowling into his acquaintances on the opposition and the job was half done.

Winning the toss, skipper Chris Freegard elected to bat first, getting the best use of a newly-rolled Old Chelmsfordians track. After the early loss of Taylor, mistiming one in the air, Mark Rynn and the captain patiently compiled a stand of 91 for the second wicket having toughed out the conditions for 22 overs. The Old Chelmsfordians by this time must have been regretting their miss of a skyer which would have seen Chris back in the hutch for 17, and it can't really be counted as a dropped catch because the fielder didn't seem to get even a finger on the ball as it came down. The Purleigh captain made the most of the let-off adding 42 with Jordan Oliver (11) and 52 with Brad Barrick (22 not out) before losing his wicket for 125 in the 44th over. Jai Patel did well to add 9 not out from 6 balls as Purleigh ended on 217 for 5 in 45 overs, a good score on a slow wicket.

It was on to the 'Purleigh squeeze' after tea as Melvin John started with a maiden, then picked up an early wicket when Shahid made a steepling catch look easy in the 3rd over. Meanwhile Matt Oliver proved hard to hit off the square with the keeper standing up and was unlucky not to improve figures of 9 overs, 1 maiden, 0 for 23 with a couple of wickets. OCs quickly fell behind the required run rate as Melvin picked up two clean bowleds leaving the batting side 68 for 3 at drinks. A double wicket maiden for Jai Patel made it 80 for 5 from 26 overs, after which it was hard for OCs to recover and the game started to drift a little in the chilly evening wind. But Jordan did his best to entertain the troops with a comedy mis-field coupled with a mangled attempt to pick up the ball having chased it down, and keeper Ed Oliver continued to amuse himself but probably annoy everyone else by whipping off the bails at almost any opportunity. Thankfully in his last over last Jai repeated his two wickets in an over feat, leaving him on a hat-trick next game, and next over Shahid skittled the number 10 and OCs were all out for 118 in 39.5 overs, Purleigh winning by 99 runs.
