Purleigh CC Lost by 29 runs

Match report PURLEIGH'S GOOSE IS COOKED IN THE HEAT

It was inevitable that sooner or later Purleigh were going to have to field first in roasting hot weather, today Chris Freegard duly lost the toss and that fate was sealed as Rankins chose to bat first.

For starters Melvin John and Matt Oliver began the bowling well, limiting the openers to a light simmer as they batted carefully to reach 50 at the first drinks break on 15 overs. With the score at 74, skipper Freegard made Purleigh's breakthrough, bowling the no. 2 bat for 22. Jai Patel removed the other opener in the same way on 78 and the Rankins batters continued to proceed with caution until the second drinks break at 96 for 2 in 30 overs. Shahid soon removed the no. 3 bat, bring a 16 year old junior to bat with a veteran colleague, and they did well to pick up the tempo, poaching singles at every opportunity while the Purleigh fielders did well not to blanch in the oven-like conditions. The pair now batted with higher heat, taking the score to 156 with 3 overs to go, Rankins ending on 173-4 with Purleigh perhaps rueing a generous helping of 32 extras in the low total.

Tea was enjoyed in continuing sunshine with not a cloud in the sky, the Purleigh players slightly stewed after their efforts.

Openers Freegard and Josh Taylor steamed off at a rolling boil, bringing the 50 up in the 6th over after a flurry of boundaries, mostly from the bat of Taylor. But the unusually early loss of the skipper for 15 at 55 for 1 was a set-back, made worse when Taylor followed for 37 at 61, then Mark Rynn for 10 at 68, still only in the 12th over. Purleigh just could not get a main course partnership together in the middle or lower order with wickets tumbling regularly around Melvin John who made 26 but once he was out at 119 for 6 the home side began to run out of reliable batsmen as the low target was starting to come into view. Some good bowling aided by one or two half-baked shots reduced Purleigh to 142-9. Last pair Wes John and Ed Oliver had plenty of overs left but only added a further two runs before Purleigh were cooked, all out for 144 in 28.5 overs, as a very winnable game slipped away with nobody able to stay in the heat of the kitchen long enough to stop the pot boiling dry.
