Match report THE CARNIVAL IS OVER FOR THE RAINHAM WIN-SEEKERS

On a day when the sad passing was announced of the Australian Seekers singer Judith Durham, famed for the 1960s UK top-ten hit ' The Carnival is Over', it was perhaps appropriate that the regular Purleigh spectators decamped to the Maldon Carnival for guaranteed fiesta fun. But they did miss a Purleigh jamboree as the home side won another toss and opted to bat first on yet another hot day with an increasingly brown and frictionless outfield.

Openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor came their closest yet this season to a century opening stand, parted on 97 inside 15 overs when Taylor was bowled for 37. Mark Rynn returned to form scoring 40, losing the skipper for 69 at 133-2 after 20 overs before himself falling at 220 after an 87-run partnership with Melvin John as the Purleigh middle-order at last made a splash. Melvin batted on until the end of the 40th over when he was caught for 84 at 274-4. Jordan Oliver made a quick 17 before being the first of two wickets to fall at 279 and with 3 overs left it seemed that Purleigh might not reach the promised 300. However, another welcome return to form, this time for Matt Oliver, who hit the last five balls for four in a procession of boundaries, floated the score to 311 for 6.

Tea was taken at 4.40pm, Rainham having apparently been wrapped up in a world of their own for a lot of the innings. The opposition approach to the chase was something of a coconut-shy with wickets falling to Melvin and Matt after attempted big shots in both of the first two overs. It was an early parade of batters back to the pavilion as Rainham slipped to 37 for 5 with Matt skittling another three inside eight overs, bowling out to end on 9 overs, 4 for 41. There was no respite for the batting side as change bowler Shahid took three wickets in his third over to leave Rainham on 63 for 8 at drinks (15 overs), surely the Dagenham Girl Pipers could have made a better stab at batting. Too little, too late, the Rainham tail hung around to face the music with the surviving opener for longer than the top order, before a well-deserved scalp for Jack Hardingham and another for skipper Freegard who finished the game with a wicket maiden on 115 all out after 29 overs for the home side to end as carnival kings.

Happily the Purleigh faithfull had returned from Maldon to witness the end of the cricketing spectacle, rewarded with a third consecutive home show next week.
