Purleigh CC Won by 80 runs
Match report
PLEASE SIR, CAN WE HAVE SOME MORE?
It was truly a season that Purleigh did not want to come to an end, as the successful run continued with a tenth consecutive victory, today a very convincing win against Springfield 4ths. Indeed the only sorry twists in the tail were that this week Purleigh could only field two Olivers, as Jordan opted for disappointment at West Ham ahead of joy at the cricket. Also we suffered the even earlier than usual loss of Josh Taylor, as he was confined to the sick bay before the game had even started.
Stand-in skipper Christian Freegard won the toss and elected to bat. A steady start was hampered when Andy Bowles was unlucky to be caught by a one-handed pluck from the air at cover, 21 for 1. Mark Rynn then partnered Freegard for 88 runs, taking the back seat while the captain gave it some serious oom-pah-pah hitting 11 fours and 7 sixes in a score of 113, his fifth century of the season, also adding a 79-run stand with Matt Oliver (42) before he was caught at the wicket. Jatin Bathla, now firmly able to consider himself one of the family at Purleigh, played a wonderful cameo hitting 32 from 19 balls to keep the scoreboard ticking nicely, taking the total to an imposing 250 for 6 from 44 overs, 1 over having been lost to a brief rain break.
Food, glorious food was enjoyed at the tea interval, after which Freegard, upon reviewing the situation, opted to stick to the tried-and-tested pairing of Jai Patel and Matt Oliver to open the bowling. This proved to be an excellent decision as they delivered a devastating start. JB pouched a magic one-hander at short cover from Matt's first ball, then his fifth delivery induced a thin snick safely gloved by keeper Ed Oliver. Next over Jai bowled the other opener leaving Springfield on 10 for 3 after 3 overs. But more was to come as Matt's second over showcased some fine Purleigh fielding, first Ed Oliver taking an alert stumping, then two balls later Mark Rynn surpassed JB's wonder-catch with a worldie of his own, diving full stretch from point to grab the ball in his left hand when it was almost behind him, Ben Stokes-style. Another scalp for Jai in his third over, clean bowling the number 6 batsman, had Springfield reeling on 21 for 6 after 5 overs and the game effectively over as a contest. 39 for 7 and 54 for 8 (after a fine pick-up and throw by Melvin John to run out the number 9) did not improve matters much for Springfield. However, the number 4 bat held firm, first with a very young but talented youngster to add 48 for the ninth wicket, and then 68 with famous veteran Martin Southwell, reaching his ton from the last ball of the match. Hard as they had tried, Purleigh could not pick a pocket or two to take the last wicket and claim maximum points. Even Purleigh's premier spinner Mark Rynn (who will buy a wicket usually) and the artful dodger Freegard could not winkle out the last man, but it didn't really matter as the game had already been in the bag for some time, Springfield ending on 170 for 9.
Matt Oliver returned his season-best figures: 10 overs, 1 maiden, 4 for 41 and Jai finished with 10 overs, 1 maiden, 3 for 49. The wily Shahid bowled 8 overs, 3 maidens, 1 for 10 and Melvin John 9 overs, 4 maidens for 28 runs, half of which came from his last over.
So the season ended with a bullseye, and what a great season it was with every single player knowing their role in the team and everyone contributing with some fine performances over the weeks to win Division 5 in style. Thanks should also go to our regular crew of supporters: Marlene, John, Andrew, JJ, Alex & Sophie plus President Dave 'Geezer' Bowles who often bumbled over when he wasn't donning the whites himself. Purleigh will be back soon in Div 4, see you there!
