Match report
DENGIE DERBY DODGILY DELIVERS DELIGHT
A warm sunny afternoon greeted the Purleigh players as they reconvened after a two week break enforced by covid and the weather, to play Tillingham 2nd XI in the 'Dengie derby' on a lovely-looking cricket wicket.
Skipper Steve Rynn won another toss and decided Purleigh would field first. This quickly looked a good choice as Jai Patel went one better than his start in the previous game, this week clean bowling the opening bat with his fourth ball rather than his fifth, followed by a second wicket-maiden when green-fingered Matt Oliver safely pouched a lobbed-up catch round the corner from a mis-hit pull shot. Tillingham's cause was not helped by a needless run out when the number four batsman tried for a second run to Matt Oliver who's quick pick-up and throw left keeper Ed Oliver with the easy task of removing the bails with the striker well short of his ground. A smart catch behind the stumps for Jai's third wicket left Tillingham reeling at 49 for 5. But the score was boosted by some lusty hitting from N Cooch on his way to a well-made 53, while the wily Shahid busied himself making life difficult for the other batsmen, finishing with 5 overs, 2 maidens, 3 for 8, his first wicket a beauty that hurried on to bowl the Tillingham skipper and end the best partnership of their innings. Melvin John's frustrations at not taking a wicket despite many near misses were eased when he bowled the last man to leave Tillingham 110 all out in 26.4 overs, with only three extras conceded and no dropped catches.
For once an early tea was enjoyed before Purleigh tried out a new opening pair of Jathin Bathla with Josh Taylor. Sadly this did not bring success as both holed out early trying big hits but only found fielders not the boundary. A third big hitter in Brad Barrick fell early in similar fashion leaving Purleigh at 22 for 3 and Tillingham with their tails up. Fortunately the experienced Mark Rynn held firm and put on 20 with Jordan Oliver and then 21 with Matt Oliver, but when the Purleigh stalwart fell for 35 at 66 for 6 things did not look too rosy in the Purleigh garden. Happily, hero Jai Patel then grasped the opportunity to confirm his status as an all-rounder, batting Purleigh out of a self-inflicted hole for the second match in succession. A sensible and well-paced partnership with Steve Rynn coming in at number 8 (showing the strength in depth of the batting line-up), edged Purleigh towards the target before 15 runs were plundered off the 32nd over to win at something of a canter, Jai ending not out on 26 and Steve 17 not out. Perhaps this was something of a sticking plaster over the cracks of one of Purleigh's less impressive batting performances of the season against ten fielders, but at least the knack of winning is still there, now eight victories in a row.
