Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI v Rainham 3 on Sat 24 Jul 2021 at 1.00
Purleigh CC Won by one wicket

Match report RAINHAM NEARLY RAIN ON JAI'S PARADE

The Purleigh boys reported for duty today to find Josh Taylor finishing a mammoth outfield-cutting stint on a small sit-on mower, as the recent warm weather had left the grass a little too long for our cultured shots along the carpet. Definite 'Clubman of the year' potential...

Skipper Steve Rynn was due to lose a toss and he duly obliged, Rainham choosing to bat first. Jai Patel got off to a flyer with the quickest Purleigh wicket of the season so far on the fifth ball of the match, inducing a well-organised looking opening batsman to leave one that pitched outside the off stump but cut back to hit the top of middle. Jai's second wicket maiden came in his second over when a swinging delivery hit the stumps to remove the other opener, 4 for 2. The next pair dug in and slowly took the score to 63 in 25 overs when Steve Rynn pouched a sharp low catch in the gully to remove the Rainham number 4, trying to increase the run rate which was being very well controlled by change bowlers Melvin John and Shahid Yasin. Two runs later Ed Oliver pulled a smart stumping out of the bag off Shahid's bowling to remove the other set batsman, who sportingly walked when it seemed the umpire may have missed the lightening-quick glovework. In any case, Bowlesy was highly amused by the keeper's dance of joy after removing the bails. It keeps him young you know! At 65 for 5 Purleigh felt well on top but two Rainham youngsters batted sensibly and effectively to put on 44 runs until Jai Patel induced a snick with a tempting one outside the off stump, and it thudded into the keeper's gloves. At 121 for 6 with 5 overs left Rainham could still have reached a bigger total but Jai's next over was a triple-wicket maiden with two plumb lbws separated by a clean bowled golden duck and two dot balls but no hat-trick. Rainham limped to 138 all out with a run-out off the last ball of their 45 overs. The bowling figures reflect how tightly Purleigh bowled, Jai Patel 10 overs, 3 maidens, 6 for 20; Matt Oliver 10 overs for 49 (unlucky not to take wickets); Melvin John a superb 10 overs, 5 maidens, 1 wicket for 8 runs and Shahid 9 overs, 2 maidens, 2 for 19.

139 required to win looked simple enough on paper and opener Andy Bowles, brimming with confidence, duly hit two crisp boundaries in the first two overs but unfortunately yorked himself going down the track and was bowled for 10 on the tenth ball of the innings. Josh Taylor, Matt Oliver, Steve Rynn, Jordan Oliver and Shahid all fell cheaply to leave Purleigh reeling at 55 for 6, only Jatin Bathla getting the measure of the bowling with 5 fours and a towering six in his score of 30. At 66 for 7 Rainham were sensing victory but the Purleigh pair of Jai Patel and Melvin John at last built a patient partnership of 53 before Melvin was bowled for a thoughtful and well-crafted 30, letting the bat do the talking to answer in the best possible way some heavy chirping from the opposition. 119 for 8 brought Jatin's pal Dal Punia to the crease for his first innings in a decade and he held an end up for long enough for Jai to push the score to 136 before Dal was run out in a mix-up. Number 11 Ed Oliver, released early from his regular scoring duties for an emergency toilet trip when it started to look like he was going to have to bat, safely blocked the only delivery he faced. Two balls later Jai dispatched a four to the legside boundary for a man-of-the-match 43 not out (to follow his season-best bowling figures), Purleigh squeaking home by 1 wicket, 140-9, in 34.2 overs.
