Match report WHEN IT'S SPRING(FIELD) AGAIN

It was a lovely sunny day for cricket but most of the Purleigh team arrived at Springfield feeling slightly hassled having been delayed by heavy traffic, the exception being Jordan Oliver who recently moved to Tiptree but somehow avoided the jam.

Losing the toss, Steve Rynn was delighted to be asked to bat first. Openers Christian Freegard and Josh Taylor scored freely from the start, sensing that there would be no better time to bat on a slow, low track, notching the first Purleigh opening partnership of the season above 50 runs in the 8th over. Sadly this was quickly followed by the loss of Taylor for 25 (who also suffered a minor and temporary loss of dignity when his chair then collapsed) at 54 for 1, and Freegard for 35 at 68 for 2. But once again the reliable brothers Rynn batted long and productively adding 78 for the third wicket, importantly keeping the momentum going at the same time. Steve was eventually caught at deep mid off for 37 while Mark batted on until being caught and bowled for 75 in the 43rd over. Meanwhile Jordan Oliver from Tiptree failed to preserve his wicket when he tried to take a quick single to one of Springfield's many good fielders and was run out for 6 in slightly comical fashion. It was left to Melvin John to hit the last ball of the innings for six in true Caribbean style, taking Purleigh to a second double Nelson of the season, 222 for 7, a decent score on that wicket.

A well-deserved tea (minus Tiptree jam) was enjoyed in the sunshine before Purleigh took to the field to defend their total. With Matthew Oliver unavoidably absent, a fit again Melvin John returned to open the bowling with Jai Patel. The pair kept things tight for the first twelve overs, putting Springfield behind the required run rate from the start, Jai chipping in with a wicket in his third over. The change bowlers were also hard to hit away, especially once the wily Shahid and experienced Freegard bowled accurately in tandem. Wickets fell regularly and Springfield were unable to build meaningful partnerships, Shahid bowling through, returning 10 overs, 4 for 24 and Freegard 9.4 overs, 3 for 24, hitting the stumps five times between them. Only 5 extras were conceded this week, one of them a bye in the 35th over when keeper Ed Oliver who had earlier taken a sharp catch standing up to the wily Shahid, at last blotted his copybook after several smart leg side takes with occasional bonus bail-whipping. Special mention should go to Paul Conway who covered most of the outer space in the playing area fielding at long leg both ends for most of the innings.

By the time the last wicket fell with the score on 118, Springfield had long since given up any hope of winning the game and the Purleigh victory was well-deserved after an excellent all-round performance.
