Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI v Ilford Catholic 2 on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 1.00
Purleigh CC Lost by 2 wickets

Match report CAN YOU HEAR ME?

Saint Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, King Henry the eighth (before he changed his mind), Joe Durston (that's one for the Orient fans), John F Kennedy, Tony Blair: your boys very nearly took an embarrassing beating - well you probably get the drift if you have ever heard that famous Norwegian football commentary from 1981. But it was hardly a credit to the Catholic church as the nine men of Purleigh eventually and inevitably succumbed to a close defeat by Ilford Catholic 2nd XI, who seemed determined to win at any cost.

Winning the toss, the Ilford skipper having seen a greenish pitch was persuaded to ask Purleigh to bat first. Possibly not his best decision on a hot afternoon against nine players including two well-seasoned veterans, but perhaps he didn't have much faith in his batting line-up.

A more circumspect innings from Josh Taylor this week helped Purleigh to a steady start before he was bowled for 13 in the 7th over with the score on 29. The bulk of Purleigh's runs then came in a superb partnership of 155 between opener Chris Freegard and Steve Rynn who finally perished on 35 trying to hit more quick runs with the score on 184 (34 overs) with Freegard notching his second excellent century of the season then not out on 104. Unfortunately this precipitated something of a collapse as the remaining batters were unable to build on a good position against some tired fielders, wickets falling regularly to leave veterans Ed Oliver and Dave Bowles (combined age of 133) to see out the innings, closing on a double-Nelson, 222 for 7 after 45 overs. C Freegard 119. Still a competitive score but adding only 38 runs in the last 12 overs probably cost Purleigh dear.

A welcome tea interval was taken after 4pm. Again Jai Patel and Matt Oliver opened the Purleigh bowling, Matt taking a wicket in his first over and being controversially denied a catch behind in his second, possibly a match-changing decision. Purleigh kept their noses just about in front until the drinks break when Ilford were 85 for 3, after Chris Freegard had caught the no.3 bat out for 41, calling loudly for the catch and refusing to let Jai Patel steal it from him. But after drinks Ilford pulled things round with some old-fashioned slogging and taking advantage of the widespread field to take easy singles. Their cause was aided by a couple more examples of lower league umpiring, sparking some heated moments. At this point Purleigh regretted the loss of their fifth specialist bowler, as a fifth-wicket partnership of 91 broke the back of the chase. Despite wickets falling regularly after that partnership was ended, Ilford had enough in the tank to pass the Purleigh total on the last ball of the 44th over.

But it was a heroic effort from the Purleigh nine in batting, bowling and fielding which would surely have been rewarded with a deserved win if we could have fielded a full eleven players. And eight points in the bag meant it was by no means a wasted day.
