Rainham 3 v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 22 May 2021 at 1.00
Purleigh CC Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
Today, the village of Purleigh could only muster nine cricketers including an over-60 and an over-70 to play Rainham 3rds at Thames RFC. The mood was not improved by the prospect of another cold, damp afternoon but both mood and weather improved as the game progressed, and the Purleigh nine came close to returning as heroes having given Rainham an excellent run for their money.
Batting first, veteran club President Dave Bowles had seemingly taken inspiration from the Kent v. Glamorgan game the previous day when Miguel Cummins faced 55 balls for 1 run. Dave matched him with 2 runs from 57 balls, and did an opener's job holding one end up, but sadly Purleigh did not have a Darren Stevens at the other end to bash a quick 190. On a wicket where scoring against tight bowling was always difficult the Rynn brothers fought hard with Steve contributing 21 and Mark 29, to slowly inch the total along. At 83 for 7 with 5 overs to go and the last pair at the wicket things did not look too healthy. But Shahid Yasin and Ed Oliver somehow scraped 22 runs together to close the innings with a psychological boost of a score over 100 at 105-7, plus the bonus of avoiding the team being all out, and giving Purleigh at least some kind of total to protect. Rainham opening bowler J Wratten returned figures of 10 overs, 7 maidens, 7 runs.
With nine players, a small score was always going to be hard to defend but Purleigh made a gallant effort. Matt Oliver bowled through for 10 overs, 4 maidens, 0 for 12, supported by Shahid's 10 overs 1 maiden 3 for 29 and Jai Patel with 10 overs, 1 maiden, 3 for 37. The wily Shahid was on a hat-trick at one point, but spoiled it with a no-ball. A little later he removed a well-set batsman with a superb swinging delivery that cut back to hit the stumps, leaving the batter staring at the broken wicket in disbelief like Virat Kohli. Rainham were made to wobble in reaching the target in 35 overs for the loss of six wickets, aided it has to be said by 33 extras, mainly wides. At least the Purleigh players could leave with heads held high after a top effort. Spare a thought for Dave Bowles who collected a painful finger injury in a valiant attempt to catch a firmly-hit shot, but at least it made a change from again having his bits frozen off in the deep.
Onwards to next week and the possibility of having more than eleven players available (touch wood).
