Match report A CLINICAL PERFORMANCE

Purleigh bounced back from a disappointing result last week and a poor showing the previous week, with a comfortable win against Great Baddow 1s at Purleigh Playing Field, albeit in rather uncomfortably hot playing conditions.

Opting to bowl first despite the heat, the policy paid early dividends for the home side, Jai Patel cleaning up both openers with 14 on the board, then Matt Oliver striking to reduce Baddow to 32 for 3. At this point the visitors battened down the hatches to avoid being skittled, Fenton compiling 43 from 93 balls and skipper Haley a patient 54 not out from 94 balls to give the innings some backbone. Good support from youngster Lightbourne, 36 from 33 balls and late hitting from the more mature Hussain took Baddow to a respectable if unspectacular 206 for 6 from their 45 overs. Some tidy bowling figures were recorded, only spoiled for the opening pair who had to bowl at the death when more risks were taken by the batsmen.

This weeks' batting openers Jordan Oliver and Josh Taylor rapidly hit 23 before Taylor was caught behind for 16 by his namesake. Jordan left at 30 for 2, bringing captain Chris to bat with Dan Oliver. The pair broke the back of the chase, adding 103 before Freegard was pinned lbw for 54. Ranjan then batted in his usual hard-hitting style as Purleigh steadily approached the target, Ranj smiting the winning four at the end of the 38th over, 33 not out from 28 balls, Dan 72 not out as the anchorman (104 balls) to go with his tidy bowling spell of 6 overs, 1 maiden, 1 for 17.
