Match report PURLEIGH'S SUPERHEROES FALL SHORT AT THE LAST

It has been a fantastic season for Purleigh Cricket Club, champions of Division 3. Sadly, the final game was a bit of a flat let-down, losing at second-placed Brookweald, but heads can be held high having played the right way all season.

Captain Marvel Chris Freegard, 995 runs this season, lost the toss and was asked to field first, which he may have chosen anyway on a damp wicket. Martin Owers, despite having the build of Stickman, bowled with the strength of The Thing, pushing it through and collecting the first wicket with another fine catch by Jordan Oliver. Melvin John took the next two wickets, a great take by Ranj followed by an age-defying return catch to dismiss opener Ahmad, Purleigh positioning themselves well at 44 for 3 after 15.1 overs. Jai Patel, held back to bowl against the strong middle order, collected the next four wickets with an lbw and excellent catches again held by Melvin, Dan and Chris. At 141 for 7 from 30 overs Purleigh were on top, but a good fightback by the Brookweald tail took them to 203 for 9 in their 45 overs, a ninth-wicket partnership of 41 in 5.1 overs doing some damage to Purleigh. Two more top class catches were held, first by Taylor clinging on to one that the Incredible Hulk would have been pleased to grab, and Jordan who swooped in like Batman for a low take with one ball to go, as had Dan for his vital catch of prolific batter Finch. Jordan ended as Purleigh's top catcher, holding on thirteen times over the season.

Iron Man Steve Rynn was promoted to opener to blunt the expected short pitched quick bowling. Josh was first to go, feathering a nick behind and walking (as later did Olivers Dan and Ed). Dan Oliver at number three made sure he was not the Invisible Man, patiently compiling 35 while losing partners Rynn (19) Jordan (5) and Ranj, who this week wielded his bat like Thor's hammer, clubbing boundaries in a quick-fire 30 from 16 balls, looking to make short work of the target until he was again caught on the boundary. Losing Dan at 95 for 5 did not help the cause, and when Captain Marvel Freegard was caught for 28 at 127 for 6 the writing was on the wall. Jai's Superman powers deserted his batting suite, out first ball, but he did finish as the top Purleigh wicket-taker with 29 victims. Melvin could not produce any trademark Spiderman shots this week, out for 2. Martin had been trying to hold things together but lost The Atom Shahid to a run out. By now rain clouds were gathering and the light was failing. Last man Ed could have done with the Human Torch's powers, not for being incandescent with rage at the oppo batsmen picking up the ball, but simply to provide some light in the gloom. He nicked off anyway, out for the first time on a Saturday this year, leaving Martin stranded 26 not out and Purleigh 42 short, 161 all out in 38.3 overs.
