Purleigh CC Won by 5 wickets

Match report BACK ON TRACK AT NAVESTOCK

After last week's glitch in the matrix, a Purleigh team packed with batsmen arrived at Navestock, meaning specialist keeper Ed Oliver found himself on 12th man duty. With the return of Andy Bowles to the side, and his habit of running late, Ed eagerly changed into his whites expecting to fill in for 25 minutes. But the oppo captain was having none of it - perhaps he thought Purleigh had Jonty Rhodes waiting in the wings rather than a short, retired 65-year-old who can't catch for toffee without his gloves, but the cricket gods struck to reward one of the less generous captaincy actions in Navestock's 257 year history, with a home defeat.

Skipper Freegard won the toss and chose to field, confident of chasing any score, even with Purleigh light of a fifth regular bowler. Jai Patel hit the stumps in his third over as he and Martin Owers exerted control in the first ten, Navestock 35 for 1. The wily Shahid removed the other opener for a well-made 35 in the 19th and then had a catch taken by Ranjan immediately after drinks, 86 for 3 in the 23rd over, and Purleigh controlling the run-rate. Stand in 5th bowler Dan Oliver picked up the fourth wicket with another fine catch by Jordan, and Josh Taylor did well to cling on in the deep to give Chris the fifth wicket at 102 in the 30th over. Dangerman Faulkner had scored 74 in good style and threatened to push on, but the return of Martin in the 38th over saw him bowled by a beauty, a feat repeated to dismiss the hard-hitting O'Connor. Jai also hit the stumps again, ending with a commendable 8 overs, 2 for 19, but Martin's magic spell continued with a victim in each of his last four overs, taking the last with 176 on the board, returning figures of 8.5 overs, 4 for 28 (four for ten in his second spell).

176 looked well within reach of the talented Purleigh batting card, with Mark Rynn a solid number ten and Shahid at 11, who has previously won games with the bat when called upon. A racing start for Chris and Josh saw 47 scored in 6 overs, knocking off a good chunk before the skipper was lbw for 30. Josh followed, bowled for 16 at 65 for 2, and Bowlesy mis-hit one to be caught for 7 at 76 for 3, still only in the 14th over. Number three Dan Oliver played a mature and responsible innings, removing most of the risky shots from his repertoire to add 39 with Ranj (13), 36 with Jordan (17), before unleashing the big guns as victory beckoned, hitting three fours in the 33rd over to end on 77 not out, seeing Purleigh to a five-wicket win with twelve overs to spare.
