Match report
"THE WORST WICKETKEEPER IN THE LEAGUE"
Such was the banter (see above) from this week's opposition, an opinion perhaps clouded by an afternoon chasing leather in the field, after inviting Purleigh to bat first. With overcast skies and a bowler-friendly looking wicket that decision was understandable. Maybe less so was the continued refusal to protect the boundary, as openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor racked up a 109 partnership in 14 overs, with a succession of fours. Taylor (26 in 26 balls) was first to go, quickly followed by the luckless Dan Oliver. The skipper, overdue for a big score, departed at 172 for 3 after 28 overs, out for 116 in 100 balls with 23 fours. Ranjan Gulati survived a comedy run out episode before Jordan went for a solid 35, 198 for 4 with 11.3 overs remaining. Ranj then took matters into his own hands, piercing and clearing the belatedly protected boundary with a succession of fours and sixes, caught in the deep on the last ball of the innings for 88 in 49 balls with a match-turning ten fours and four big sixes. Mark Rynn returned to form supporting Ranj with 24 not out, Purleigh ending on a formidable 295 for 5 from 45 overs.
Eastwood, under scoreboard pressure from the start, could not afford to hang about, although the Purleigh squeeze just about kept the lid on until wickets started to fall with Jai hitting the stumps in the 7th and 9th overs to remove both openers, 26 for 2. Matt Oliver joined in having the no.4 caught by Jordan, 39 for 3, and Shahid and Martin Owers chipped in with a wicket each before drinks to leave Eastwood on 99 for 5 at the interval (23 overs). In his next two overs, a refreshed Martin settled things by taking three more wickets, with good catches from Matt and Mark, plus a clean bowled, 108 for 8. As in previous games, the later batsmen dug in with nothing much to play for and proved harder to winkle out, the skipper eventually taking the 9th wicket at 144 in the 35th over. Shahid returned to trap the last batter lbw at 159 after exactly 40 overs, Purleigh winning by 136 runs in a game that was in fact played in a generally good spirit.
