Springfield 3 v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Jul 2025 at 1.00pm
Purleigh CC Won by 6 wickets

Match report SPRINGFIELD WASTE A WINNING TOSS

It was another Saturday scorchio in which Purleigh were asked to field first under the hot sun. What should have been a useful advantage on a lightening-quick outfield was squandered, as a mixture of ambitious shots and good bowling reduced home side Springfield 3rds to 40 for 7 in 13.3 overs, and that was with three Purleigh dropped catches, none easy and thankfully none expensive. Matt Oliver struck first in the fourth over, a lifter outside off stump nicked behind. Next over Jai Patel hit the stumps with a sharp nip-backer, and four balls later a good Freegard catch off a skyer gave Matt a second wicket. The welcome return of Martin Owers saw his first ball dispatched for four, but the second was a jaffa, another that darted back in off the pitch to hit the wicket, unplayable at this level, 28 for 4 in the eleventh. Martin's next over was a one-man show with a full-stretch caught and bowled followed three deliveries later by a full ball hitting the timbers, leaving Springfield in a heap of trouble at 38 for 6 in 13 overs. It got worse as Dan Oliver held a high slapped shot off brother Matt, making it 40 for 7. At this point, Springfield were forced to change tack, perhaps belatedly, but the young 8 and 9 batters played sensibly adding 37 in 9.1 overs before the returning Patel removed no.9 for 20 with an excellent yorker, 77 for 8. A nick behind off Melvin made it 88 for 9, and Jai returned for a one-ball third spell with a bail-trimmer to end the innings on 107 in 34.1 overs

It might have looked a formality for Purleigh to knock off the runs quickly, but cricket can be a funny game and with Division 3's top two run scorers back in the hutch at 16 for 2 in 4.2 overs, Springfield were sensing the chance of an upset. Two more wickets falling at 45 in the 16th over certainly gave the visitors a wobble, but the two stalwarts of the Purleigh brains' trust, Josh Taylor and Steve Rynn, brought their experience into play, inching closer to the target in small increments with the advantage of plenty of overs in hand. Taylor reached a well-deserved fifty with a four in the 31st over, and two balls later he hit the winning runs to end on 56 not out (92 balls), Steve 22 not out (47 balls) as Purleigh completed eleven wins on the spin.
