Match report PURLEIGH PUSH ON

A winning toss on a roasting hot day saw Purleigh choose to bat first against second-placed Brookweald. Unfortunately, Chris Freegard gloved a feather to the keeper in the second over and walked for a rare duck, showing how the game should be played. Dan Oliver and Josh Taylor forged a second-wicket partnership of 57, Taylor well caught for 25 after 12 overs. Jordan Oliver joined Dan and played another mature innings in a third-wicket partnership of 79, Dan holing out on the boundary in the 26th over for 82 with a ton beckoning. Purleigh then proceeded to throw away their advantage, losing a wicket in each of the next three overs and another in the 31st, slumping to 154 for 7. At 177 for 9 in the 38th it looked like the home side might fall short and leave a few overs out there, but Ed Oliver (4 not out) played a characteristic barnacle innings, landing a triple psychological boost with Matt Oliver (25 not out) to inch Purleigh over 200 for a fourth batting point, keeping Brookweald cooking in the field for the full 45 overs, denying them a fifth bowling point, unable to bowl us out. The total was quite a few short of what might have been, given that two gun batsmen were out for nought, but it was something to defend at least.

Jai Patel and Matt Oliver started the bowling well, backed up in the field with good catches from Jordan and Chris, plus a caught and bowled from Matt to put Brookweald behind the required run-rate at 30 for 3 from 12 overs. More tight bowling from Shahid and Melvin made the visitors use 14 more overs to reach 85, when Chris did very well to hold a steepler for the fourth wicket. Number 5 bat Finch continued to look capable of winning the match on his own while his partners were gradually winkled out, aided by a sharp run-out from Melvin, heaping more and more pressure on to one batsman until he hit one aerial shot too many, a stinger held at midwicket by serial sausage-eating competition winner Josh Taylor, who clutched it into the breadbasket, 164 for 8 in the 40th over leaving a lot of work for the tailenders. A superb Jordan Oliver catch in the deep took Purleigh to the brink at 180 for 9 and a Jai Patel bail-trimmer ended proceedings on 186 after 44 overs, Purleigh once again prevailing in a tight competitive match. Nine wins out of nine in the first half of the season is surely better than anyone expected.
