Match report
PURLEIGH ROLL ON AT RAYLEIGH
On a scorching hot day both captains wanted to win the toss and bat, this time the coin came down in favour of home side Rayleigh, who accomplished one goal by keeping Purleigh out in the hot sun for most of the 45 overs, but could only manage 128 all out in doing so (the same score achieved by last weeks' opposition, statto fans).
It took nearly seven overs for the first wicket to fall, a Jai Patel short one teasing the batsman into an attempted hook, only to cloth it to Shahid at square leg with just ten runs on the board, Jai having probed away with some quick deliveries, keeping Ed Oliver interested behind the stumps. Matt Oliver took the second wicket in the twelfth over with a lovely outswinging yorker that swerved in late to hit leg peg. Wickets fell regularly when change bowlers Melvin John and Shahid Yasin came on, Shahid, like Matt, defying the heat to bowl nine overs in one spell, ending with 2 maidens, 3 for 29, and Melvin had a good day with 6.1 overs, 1 maiden, 4 for 20, Rayleigh 128 all out in 40.1 overs with no partnership higher than 20 runs.
Skipper Freegard risked angering the cricketing gods by fiddling with the Purleigh batting order, and it looked like there could be retribution as the visitors slipped to 7 for 2 inside the second over, with Josh Taylor and Dan Oliver back in the hutch. But the gods showed leniency, as the changes were made not because the match or opposition was being taken lightly, but to give players a game who had a 'thanks for coming' last week. Jordan Oliver duly obliged with his best knock of the season so far, anchoring the innings with 28 not out while Freegard made hay with 74 (12 fours, 3 sixes, 56 balls) in a partnership of 103, with Ranjan Gulati again showing his potential delivering the coup-de-grace with a six, and 17 from 11 balls to make it a straight eight wins for Purleigh.
