Match report
PURLEIGH'S POWER ON PARADE
A strong-looking Purleigh side assembled to take on Navestock, two divisions higher than the home team last season. Sadly, they proved no match this time round, despite winning the toss and batting first. Navestock made a careful start seeing out three successive maidens, each sullied by a single fielding extra. A few good hits took them to 41 in 11 overs, until Matt Oliver removed an opener in his sixth and seventh overs, both falling to aerial shots well held by Chris Freegard, the second catch a full-stretch grab at shoulder height. By now, Purleigh were down to ten fielders, Martin Owers taking a precautionary trip to hospital with a badly cut mouth after a firm hit leapt off the turf leaving no chance to get out of the way. Fortunately, Mark Rynn at home answered the batphone and swapped his dressing gown for cricket whites, racing to the ground in time to help out for a good portion of the innings. 44 for 2 became 47 for 3 when a Dan Oliver direct hit ran out the number 4 batsman and at the same score Matt Oliver threw to the bowler's end to run out the number 3, assisted by a smart Freegard pick-up, 17 overs gone. A fifty partnership took Navestock to 98, but four batsmen were quickly bowled out on that score, Melvin John and Jai Patel hitting the stumps twice each. The visitors limped along slowly, Dan Oliver eventually mopping up the remaining two wickets, making it 128 all out in 42.1 overs.
After tea, it turned out that Navestock's bowling was not a lot better than their batting on this occasion. Josh Taylor hit 18 out of the 19 runs scored before he was stumped after four overs. Dan Oliver joined the skipper who wasted no time dealing mainly in boundaries, the score racing to 68 in 10 overs, with a certain greenhouse once again close to a hit from friendly fire. The remaining 61 runs needed were knocked off in 8.4 more overs, Dan joining in the fun hitting 6, 4, 6 to finish on 45 not out, with another red-inker for Chris, 65 not out.
On to next week for a potential 'battle of the Patels' at Rayleigh.
