Match report DAN'S MAIDEN PURLEIGH TON THE SPRINGBOARD TO BEAT SPRINGFIELD

A lost toss this week still saw Purleigh bat first as Springfield opted to bowl in windy but sunny conditions.

Tight bowling and the early loss of Josh Taylor to a miscue saw Purleigh 6 for 1 after four overs, bringing Dan Oliver to the crease. Fortunately, he got his head down, played himself in, and was the backbone of the innings sharing partnerships of 26 with skipper Freegard (13), 53 with Melvin John (26), 44 with Jordan Oliver (19) and 78 with Steve Rynn (25) to reach a well-deserved hundred (14 fours, 3 sixes, 86 balls) in the 32nd over. Dan was finally winkled out at 207 for 7 and the lower order did well to add 45 more runs in the 11.4 overs remaining (Jai Patel 23), Purleigh bowled out for 252 with a handy 29 extras including a rare penalty 5 for dinging a helmet behind the keeper.

Jai Patel made a vital strike in his second over, bowling the dangerous Vince for 12, playing big shots perhaps too early in the innings. This seemed to take the wind out of Springfield's sails, and despite the occasional boundary they never really ticked the scoreboard over enough to keep up with the required run-rate, falling further and further behind. Wickets for Melvin John in the 13th and 15th overs removed two good batsmen. The powerful Powell added 38 with Paturkar and 75 with Parasuraman before holing out to Jordan Oliver in the deep off Martin Owers, a welcome relief to see a catch held after several drops of varying difficulty. Owers' next ball was pumped for a mighty six over the trees by the new batsman, but a charge down the wicket for a second attempt next ball produced a thin edge to the keeper, 162 for 6 but by now 40 overs had been bowled. Another scalp for Patel next ball left two youngsters at the crease with the impossible task of scoring 90 from 29 balls, although in reality the chase had long since been given up, as Springfield either mis-timed their charge to the total or just didn't have the beans once the top order was out fairly early.

Another great win, and it was off to the Fox for some Duff beer (well there had to be one Simpsons reference)
