Match report
PURLEIGH FOLD UNDER PRESSURE FROM CREASEY
On paper, Purleigh looked a strong side against Eastwood, but on the day did not quite bring their A-size game. Put in to bat, opener Steve Rynn was soon back to the margins of the field, caught at midwicket. Brother Mark dug in with Josh Taylor, who enjoyed using his new double-elephant size bat to good effect, scoring 63 (10 fours, 1 six) before being out in the 22nd over, having put on 76 for the second wicket. Sadly, the Purleigh middle order crumpled like tissue paper around number four, Chris Freegard, who finally found a stiffer partner in Matt Oliver, showing some fibre to keep an end up while the skipper did his best to pulp the bowling, ending 102 not out (15 fours, 2 sixes), the away side's card finally reading 220 for 6 in 45 overs.
Purleigh made a good start in defence of the total, Matt and Jai holding Eastwood to 33 for 1 in ten overs - a great catch by Jordan Oliver giving Matt the wicket. But now Ryan Creasey played probably the best innings against Purleigh so far this season, negotiating the sporadic loss of four other partners to score 122 not out, guiding his team home with a mixture of boundaries and sharply-run ones and twos. Perhaps Purleigh were unlucky with tough chances that did not stick and a decision that went against them, but keeper Ed Oliver ran out of steam after a promising start and shelled one down the leg side off Shahid, then missed a stumping off the same bowler to give Creasey two generous let-offs, earning him the fools-cap of the day award.
Today, Purleigh were a few sheets short of a full ream, but we turn a new page to next week and a trip away to Chelmsford Titans.
