Match report Perhaps the less said about this game the better, as suspensions and poor availability forced Purleigh to field a ten-man team against Rainham 2s.

Put in to bat, disaster struck early with the losses of Josh Taylor and Jai Patel inside the first three overs with 12 runs on the board. Dan and Matt Oliver dug in for 12 overs taking the total to 71 when Matt was caught at slip for 19. Dan had hit 42 out of 89 when he was out, sparking a collapse as four wickets fell on that score, forcing Ed Oliver to survive a hat-trick ball. Ed and Callum Annette, scoring his first Purleigh run (not out into the bargain), squeezed out another nine before Ed was lbw for 6 - his branch of the Oliver family having scored 67 of the 76 runs off the bat, from 111 of the 161 balls bowled. Extras generously chipped in with a handy 22.

Things did not improve when Purleigh started bowling, 13 coming from a loose first over. An early wicket, well caught by Jordan Oliver off Jai, gave Purleigh some hope, but the Rainham batting was a one-man show, with T. Elie hitting 53 of the first 74 scored with the occasional good shot between the cross-bat swipes before he was bowled by Shahid. By now, the damage was done, and despite a tight spell from Terry Oliver of 4 overs for 11 runs (including a six), Rainham inched their way to the target after 20 overs, with no Purleigh players, on or off the field, covering themselves in glory this week.

But the good news is that we are still top of division 4, albeit with a reduced lead - with a chance to extend it again next week at home to second-placed Great Wakering.
