Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI v Basildon and Pitsea 2 on Sat 29 Jun 2024 at 13.00
Purleigh CC Won by eight runs
Match report
Returning to their familiar flat and reliable home turf, Purleigh had no hesitation in batting first, after winning the toss on a hot day.
Openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor surpassed their previous best partnership of the season, scoring 85 in 18 overs before Freegard was well caught on the boundary for 58, by one of Basildon's group of confident youngsters. Taylor, drained by the heat, was out one run later, quickly followed by Dan Oliver, 87 for 3. Dan's duck was out-done by a first-baller for the unfortunate Jai Patel, and Purleigh had thrown away their good start, falling to 100 for 5, five wickets having fallen for just 15 runs in 9.2 overs. Fortunately, Mark Rynn once again dropped anchor when joined by born-again batsman Melvin John, who took the attack back to the bowlers, reaching 50 from 38 balls, ending 70 not out (58 balls, twelve fours) having put on ninety with Mark who accumulated 28, mostly in singles to give the strike back to Melvin. A good last over vitally yielded thirteen runs and Purleigh ended on 210 for 7, a competitive score and a good recovery.
After tea, Purleigh made a steady start defending their total, conceding only 66 runs from the first twenty overs, but with only one wicket lost, Basildon had batters waiting to take advantage of the absence of a fifth regular bowler. This week, Dan Oliver stepped into the breach, delivering 9 overs, 2 for 38, figures only dented by two late sixes as Basildon hit out towards the end. Purleigh chipped away, seemingly on top at 138 for 6 after 35 overs, Freegard having taken three wickets including two caught and bowled, Dan two and Melvin one wicket. Undeterred by requiring 7 an over for the last ten, two of the Basildon youngsters made a good game of it, running well between the wickets to add 47, before a run out left the visitors on 185 for 7 with 13 balls left and 26 runs required. This proved too much with Jai Patel and the experienced Melvin John bowling the last two overs, Basildon ending on 202 for 8, Jai hitting the stumps with the last ball of the match, for a hard-fought win.
