Match report
BENTLEY CRASH AGAINST RUTHLESS PURLEIGH
A very strong-looking Purleigh team assembled for a mini-adventure against Bentley 2nd XI, hoping to dodge the rain with the full complement of bowlers backed up by the welcome return of silver shadow Andy Bowles to bolster the batting.
Winning the toss in damp, overcast conditions, Purleigh chose to bowl first and struck early as the centurion opener of the previous week tamely hit a Matt Oliver full-toss in the air, well caught at mid-on by Jai Patel. Jai then induced a thick nick from the other opener, and keeper Ed Oliver pounced like a jaguar to collect a low one-handed diving catch, Alan Knott style. Thankfully, Matt bowled no beemers this week, and was rewarded with two catches at the wicket (early father's day presents for his dad), neither required audi-o enhancement as both registered clearly on the snickometer. Another wicket, lbw, for Jai, and a yorker on the stumps for Shahid, saw Bentley slip to 33 for 5 with the wheels coming off. A minor fightback by the late-middle order helped the batting side to 66 for 6 before the canny wiles of Shahid struck twice in the 25th over. Nothing remained in the Bentley tank, and the innings spluttered to an end at 69 all out, six Purleigh players having taken a catch.
Tea-time had not been reached, but a quick turn-round was thwarted by another rain shower. Fortunately the threatened storm turned into a gentle zephyr, enabling the Purleigh openers to focus on their reply. After an early let-off for Josh Taylor, that Rolls-Royce of batsmen, Chris Freegard, forced the fielders to escort the ball to the boundary on eight occasions. Taylor's innnings, although perhaps a little coarser, was just as valuable in sparking a Purleigh fiesta, as the pair knocked off the runs in 16.2 overs, a triumph heralding a big lead at the top of division 4 after seven games.
Next week, we transit to Boreham interchange, for an exchange of pleasantries with the newly-named Boreham Royals.
