Match report NO SLEEPING ON THE JOB AT GREAT WAKERING

Another fine team performance was rewarded with a win in an exciting game of fluctuating fortunes at Great Wakering.

Losing the toss, Purleigh were put in to bat on a damp green-top, on which it was difficult to bat, and a slow outfield didn't help. The early loss of Taylor, 7 for 1, was followed by worse news as Chris Freegard received a nasty lifter off a length and a looping edge was well caught one-handed in the gully, 26 for 2. Dan Oliver and Mark Rynn dug in and battled hard to nudge the score to 55 before Rynn's vigil was ended. At 55 for 3 in 16 overs, Purleigh were wobbling, but a match-defining partnership between Dan and Jordan Oliver followed. Advantage was taken of some lesser change bowlers to add 97 in the next 18 overs, Dan undone lbw on 71 (81 balls, 10 fours, 1 six) by one that kept low. Jordan took the slow outfield out of the equation by hitting four lovely big sixes in a mature innings of 56 (67 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes), bowled at 172 for 5 with 8 overs to go. Jai Patel, Melvin and Steve Rynn ticked the scoreboard over until four balls remained and keeper Ed Oliver for once found himself in the middle with his batting pads on. Unable to score the six needed for a fifth batting point, at least the opposition were denied their last bowling point as Purleigh ended on 220 for 9, Ed notching his first Purleigh run for over a year, and in the process proving on his first ball that a 42-year-old 'box' protector still works fine* - hat tip to Mitre Sports (*Ed does own a much newer box but its just not as comfortable!)

After tea, fears were unfounded that 3.5 hours of sunshine might have calmed the pitch, as the Purleigh bowlers kept it tight early on, Jai striking with a firm edge safely pouched high to his right by keeper Ed Oliver. A second victim for Jai in his next over, a good catch by Jordan at mid-off, left Great Wakering on 28 for 2. Matt Oliver produced a five-card trick: wide, wide, wide, wide, jaffa to hit off stump for the third wicket, and the home side's innings was following a similar pattern to Purleigh's. This continued with a big 5th wicket stand that shifted the momentum back to Wakering, as Johnson and Holman added 86 in quick time before the tricksy Shahid slid one through Johnson and bowled him, 134 for 5. That left Holman with a lot to do (after his bowling of 9-4-19-2), but the Purleigh brains' trust made the right call in bringing back Jai Patel, who removed the dangerous Holman with the first ball of his spell, then once again cleaned up the tail with three more wickets in ten balls as Great Wakering capitulated, skipper Freegard delivering the coup-de-grace as some reward for being hit around, bravely bowling while the going was tough.
