Purleigh CC Won by eight runs

Match report PURLEIGH PREVAIL AFTER 90 OVERS OF EFFORT

In a week where Sky News reported that the youth of today no longer use, or know the meaning of words such as 'pillock', 'plonker' and 'tosspot', among many others, it would be all too tempting to help keep them alive via the medium of a Purleigh cricket report - but that seems unfair after a sterling effort and good performance to win a match against Rainham 2nds that went the full 90 overs and ended after the church bells had chimed for 8pm.

Winning the toss, Freegard elected to bat, and moved serenely, if sometimes a bit stiffly, to his opening ton of the season, partnered first for 59 by Dan Oliver, who played some majestic shots in his 25, then adding 104 with Mark Rynn, who ended on a more scratchy but no less valuable 36 not out. Jordan Oliver hit a quick 25 after the loss of Freegard to a good catch in the 30th over at 185 for 3. Purleigh finished on a handy 241 for 5 after 45 overs and a late tea was taken.

Rainham's openers were parted in the second over when Steve Rynn took a good low catch off Matt Oliver's 5th legitimate ball, having again tested the keeper with a couple of wide ones, safely pouched this week. It took a 'drinks-break wicket' to separate the next pair, who despatched some loose delivers to add 108 before the wily Shahid trapped the other opener in the 24th over. Purleigh chipped away, taking wickets at 147 (a great catch by Steve Rynn), 166 (a vital one as the skipper bowled the dangerous Elie for 60), 170 and 191 in the 40th over, with the home side seemingly in control. But the Rainham no.5 rode his luck, both in playing aerial shots and being adjudged not out when he nicked one to the keeper early on, biffing his side towards the target before Shahid tailed one in on to leg stump, shortly after Mark Rynn had turned the match back in the bowling side's favour by leaping to save a nailed-on six and turn it into a single. Thirteen were needed off the final over but after a run-out on the first ball, Rainham were down to their last pair and they didn't have enough in the tank, ending on 233 for 9, Purleigh winning by 8 runs.
