Match report A VERY DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT

Warm sunny weather arrived on cue for the last game of the season and a Purleigh side once again containing four Olivers gave a good account of themselves against Division 4 champions Beaulieu Park.

Put in to bat, the home side lost Josh Taylor in the fifth over with the score on eight. Beaulieu's accurate bowlers continued to offer few bad balls as Dan Oliver joined skipper Freegard at the crease. Purleigh's two best batsmen patiently added 66 before Dan was very well caught and bowled for 24, trying to force the pace twenty overs in. Chris batted on, adding 50 with Jordan Oliver for the 4th wicket and 48 with Jai Patel for the 5th. The captain reached his 9th hundred of the season (1,313 runs, av. 109.4) in the last over, during which Jai sacrificed his wicket to get Chris back on strike. The next ball was hit high and long towards the boundary, and would have gone for six if not well held for a difficult catch, Freegard out for 101, the innings ending on 190 for 7 from 45 overs, a decent score against a quality bowling attack with no weak links.

After tea, Purleigh were hoping for a quick wicket to expose Beaulieu's weaker suit, batting. This should probably have materialised in the third over when Melvin rapped the opener on the back pad bang in front of the stumps, but the umpire's finger somehow stayed down. A valuable partnership of 76 runs ensued, until the reprieved batter dragged on a wide one from Matt Oliver, bowled for 44. Jai Patel bowled the other opener next over and Purleigh had a foot in the door. A partnership of 45 for the 3rd wicket took the score to 121 before Shahid held a good catch at deep mid-off, a wicket for Melvin. Bowling with his tail up, Melvin took two more scalps on 126. Two good catches from Josh Taylor, one at slip off Shahid and one in the deep for Melvin's 4th wicket put Purleigh in the box seat at 143 for 7. A run out made it 153 for 8 and a good catch in the deep by Melvin made it 160 for 9 with six overs left. But the last pair could both hold a straight bat, and rode their luck to inch their way to the target, annoyingly for Purleigh reaching it in the last over with a single from the player responsible for the earlier, and costly, generous not out decision, his wild celebration doubly irritating. But Purleigh had given the champions a fright and probably deserved to have won, although a high extras count was also costly on this occasion.

All in all, it was a successful season with ten wins and five losses, big thanks go to all involved, from preparing pitches, ensuring eleven players turn up, making big efforts to be there, to the loyal band of supporters - all much appreciated.
