Match report
PURLEIGH GET THE JOB DONE
After the previous week's washout, the Purleigh team were champing at the bit to take on Rayleigh Fairview. Due to a car breakdown, the lads had to wait more than 30 minutes past the scheduled start time for the opposition to assemble, due to a wedding even then there were only ten players including two youths and several regular second-teamers.
Skipper Freegard won the toss and chose to bat, probably to the relief of Melvin John as this granted him an extra 3 hours to recover from the excesses of the previous day cheering on the Essex team at Chelmsford. Regular openers Chris Freegard and Josh Taylor rose to the occasion, compiling their best opening partnership of the season, putting on 141 with Josh out-scoring Chris who was first out having made 61. Drinks were taken at the fall of that wicket and Taylor was next out for 80, 154 for 2. Matt Oliver, back up the order this week, now joined Mark Rynn and the pair put on a solid partnership of 110 before Rynn was stumped for 48 with just nine balls left. Jai Patel, having waited ages for a bat, hit 7 from 7 balls and Matt ended 55 not out in a welcome return to the runs, Purleigh totalling a respectable 277 for 3 from 45 overs, on a tricky batting surface after recent wet weather.
Rayleigh Fairview probably didn't fancy their chances of chasing down that score, and so it proved as two wickets fell in the first seven balls, Melvin and Jai both hitting the stumps. The score had limped to 9 bu the eighth over, in which Jai took two more wickets to leave the opposition with no hope. A fighting 48 from the skipper barely made a dent in the deficit before a looping edge caught by Mark Rynn off Matt Oliver saw him fall at 77 for 7. Next ball Matt produced a good one to see off the last man, Fairview being one short with another already having left early, Purleigh the winners by 199 runs in a strangely flat game.
A sterner test awaits next away at Chelmsford Spartans.
