Beaulieu Park 1 v Purleigh CC Saturday 1st XI on Sat 01 Jul 2023 at 1 pm
Purleigh CC Lost by four wickets

Match report PURLEIGH'S POOR RUN CONTINUES LIKE AN ISLAND OF LOST SOULS

On the 78th birthday of Blondie-icon Debbie Harry, which incidentally makes her even older than Purleigh President Dave Bowles, but certainly more attractive to look at back in the day, a slightly makeshift eleven arrived at top-of-the-table Beaulieu Park, after selector Steve Rynn had spent far too long hanging on the telephone in an effort to even assemble a team. We were also touched by the presence of Alex Reeves on his welcome return from injury.

Acting skipper Jai Patel lost the toss, and Purleigh were asked to bat first on a soft, mossy green-top when bowling certainly looked like the preferred option. You would have needed a heart of glass not to feel sorry for stand-in opener Steve Rynn, unluckily bowled off bat and boot in the second over. Mark Rynn at number 3 hit a nice boundary but then fell victim to one that kept low off the dodgy track. Things went from bad to worse with the loss of Taylor, lbw in the 9th over, 13 for 4. New batter Jai Patel failed to 'call me' when he set off on an ambitious single first ball, only to see Jordan Oliver comfortably run out, a bit of an X-offender, that dismissal, 13 for 5. But Jai got his head down and tried to make amends, batting on until he fell at 57 for 7 having added 20 with Matt Oliver and 19 with Dave Bowles, who was bowled by a good ball for a hard-fought, crease-occupying duck, one of five among the team this week. Unsurprisingly, the tail did not wag, it was more a case of fade away and radiate as the innings closed on a paltry 66 all out from 30 overs.

After tea, Purleigh knew that one way or another, they would have to produce a magic performance to pull this gig out of the bag. Fired-up bowlers Melvin John and Jai Patel, hoping to rip it to shreds, each took a wicket in their second over to give Purleigh some hope. The feat was repeated in their respective fourth overs leaving Beaulieu shaken on 27 for 4. A fifth wicket fell, as Melvin hit the stumps for a second time, just five runs later (32 for 5) and Purleigh were left dreaming of what might have been had they scored 100. A shot-a-ball partnership of 26 ensued, breaking the back of the chase and demonstrating possibly the best approach to batting on the home strip. A sixth wicket fell at 58 giving both bowlers three wickets each in a splendid effort, but Beaulieu knocked off the runs required with no further alarms. To look on the brite side, Purleigh bowled and fielded much better than they batted and picture this - next week sees the return of the talismanic skipper, top run-scorer and handy bowler Chris Freegard, so hopefully Purleigh will be in raptures with a much-needed win.
