Purleigh CC Lost by seven wickets

Match report NO FAIRY-TALE ENDING FOR PURLEIGH

The day started well for stand-in skipper Jai Patel as he won the toss on a hot, humid day and sensibly chose to bat. In contrast Jordan Oliver arrived at the ground to find he had packed one of his partner Keira's dresses instead of his cricket trousers, and had to hastily borrow a somewhat larger pair of Chris Freegards', who did not need them as he was on a family holiday at Disneyland. Winning the toss was about as good as it got for Purleigh, as at least nine players proceeded to put in a bit of a Mickey Mouse batting performance against Rayne. This week the team ranged in age from 16 to 73 with representation from every decade in between, and including at least one dwarf.

Purleigh were given a good start by openers Mark Rynn and Josh Taylor, who continued his run of good form avoiding being out early to put on 50 together after 12.2 overs, continuing to 64 in 16.2 overs before Josh was out lbw for 38. But this solid platform was squandered, as the rest of the side could only add a further 55 runs between them with four 'Donald Ducks' and some Goofy performances from the middle and lower order, some of whom appeared to be batting with Broomsticks if not Bedknobs, leaving Purleigh looking like a load of Dumbos, to end on 119 all out from 36.5 overs, failing to gain a single batting point (at 125) even after being 113 for 5 with 12 overs left.

The home side took to the field after tea knowing that a good start was vital if they were to defend their low score. Rayne even risked stirring the wrath of the cricket gods by allowing one player to leave at tea and others to get changed out of their whites, so confident were they. Jai Patel did his best to punish such arrogance, keeper Ed Oliver rolling back the years like Peter Pan to snaffle an early sharp chance high to his right, not long before safely taking a regulation feather, the Rayne batter proving he was no Pinocchio by walking immediately - Jai has now had six caught behinds in the last four games. In truth it would have been a Robin Hood style mugging had Purleigh won, even after that encouraging start, and Rayne batters Mehboob and Ali dug in to knock off the bulk of the runs, albeit with several aerial shots that did not go to hand, until Ali lost patience and was stumped for 34 off a Taylor tempter. Seven bowlers were tried but Rayne passed their target in 29.2 overs.
