Match report BOWLESY MARKS HIS CALENDAR FOR A HAPPY FINISH

Purleigh Cricket Club welcomed the much-anticipated return to the starting eleven of Andy Bowles, absolved of parental duties for the afternoon and he certainly made the most of it.

On the hottest day of the year so far, it was a good toss to win and the skipper had no hesitation in batting first. Josh Taylor continued his good form scoring 26 out of an opening partnership of 30 with Chris Freegard against some quickish bowling. Purleigh might have been shell-shocked to next lose the captain, lbw for 22 to one that kept low, but the rest of the team showed that they could step up to the plate, and no batter was out for less than a double-figure score. From the loss of Mark Rynn at 69 for 3, when the innings could still have stalled, Andy Bowles proved that class is permanent as he put on 98 with Jordan Oliver before being caught on the long leg boundary for 50. Jordan went soon after for a useful 34 but Jai Patel and Melvin John picked up the baton, quickly adding 74 for the 6th wicket in just 8.3 overs, Melvin bowled by a slower ball for 38 after some entertaining shots, Jai selflessly run out for 40 going for broke. Matt Oliver smashed his first ball for four and Purleigh ended on a very useful 264 for 7 in 45 overs.

After tea, it was up to opening bowlers Melvin and Matt to apply the Purleigh squeeze, supported by some keen fielding. Melvin was hit for an early four but when the Rayleigh batter tried a repeat he was well caught in the deep by Jordan, giving Purleigh a first-over breakthrough. A disastrous mix-up forced the other opener to sacrifice his wicket to save his skipper, run out at 23 for 2. Plenty of dot balls followed until the no.4 bat lost patience and hit one high in the air to be snaffled by Jai off Matt Oliver, 36 for 3. Matt now earned his reward having been unlucky in previous games, taking three more wickets with the score stuck on 38 aided by catches from Freegard and Taylor and a rather tasty legside stumping from Ed Oliver. Sadly a hat-trick did not follow, but a five-fer was achieved late in Matt's 9-over spell with a bail trimmer to dismiss the number 8. Jai returned to bowl the Rayleigh captain who top-scored at no. 3 with 35, also clattering the woodwork to remove numbers 9 and 10 (87 all out, 27.1 overs) but not before keeper Ed had prolonged the agony by spilling a gentle sitter off Freegard, causing a slight delay to the finish, but not enough to make Purleigh late for Jai's 8pm booking at Prezzo's.
