Match report
PROUD MARLENE
Just two days after the sad passing of Tina Tuner, Purleigh skipper Chris Freegard once again proved he is 'Simply the Best' batsman in the T Rippon League Division Four. He's also good at winning the toss, giving Purleigh the chance to bat first at Bentley Cricket Club.
Openers Freegard and Taylor were forced to show some respect in the face of some accurate opening bowling, with the early loss of Taylor this week occurring in the third over with 11 on the board. But Mark Rynn and Freegard decided 'Let's Stay Together' as they batted for 25 overs in a partnership of 110, having taken Purleigh past the drinks break into a solid position. Bentley somehow managed to break every rule by dropping the skipper on 66 and 72, costly errors as Freegard eased to his century in the 40th over, then powered on to 150 just 4.5 overs later ending on 153 not out in a total of 245 for 4 from 45 overs, showing that we don't need another hero, at least for this week.
Even in their wildest dreams Purleigh knew there was work to do with the ball and the rest of the team would have to get stuck in, and so it proved as Bentley made a solid start keeping close to the required run rate to be 95 for 4 at drinks but crucially by this time Melvin John had struck twice with also one wicket each for Shahid Yasin and Jai Patel, as inroads were made into the batting order. When the 5th wicket fell to a stumping off Shahid at 137 it looked a tough task for Bentley to reach the target, and so it proved as wickets fell regularly to scoreboard pressure with tight return spells for Jai Patel and Matt Oliver, Shahid having removed the middle order to take 4 for 46. Bentley were all out for 191 in 44.2 overs, with Josh Taylor taking the last of Purleigh's four good catches in the outfield, the visitors winning by 54 runs.
So the Purleigh crew carry on rolling down the river, onwards to next week and a home game against rivals Boreham.
