Match report
SKIPPER FREEGARD CROWNED KING OF BATTING IN THE RAIN
Sadly the coronation day weather gods were not smiling for the first league fixture of the season and both teams did well to get a game on in the drizzle, the match reduced to 40 overs each after a late start in the hope that the rain would clear.
On losing the toss Chris Freegard might not have been too worried about being asked to bat first, giving Purleigh use of the wicket before it got too wet. Openers Freegard and Josh Taylor made a steady and watchful start trying to get used to the slow pace of the early-season strip. At 27 after 10 overs Taylor mis-timed a drive and was caught at mid-off for 10. Number 3 Melvin John was unlucky to get a good lifting ball early on and nicked off to the keeper. Steve Rynn and the skipper negotiated the difficult conditions well to reach 57-2 at drinks, or 'fag-break' as it might be known at Purleigh. A disastrous running mix-up at 61 caused the sacrifice of Steve's wicket in the 22nd over, at which point Basildon probably fancied their chances of rolling the batting over and knocking off the runs for a win before it all got too wet, as the weather forecast was indicating. But Freegard and Jordan Oliver had other ideas, batting together to the end in a well-paced partnership. Jordan played the necessary anchor role rotating the strike nicely while Chris continued last season's good form accumulating runs steadily until he reached his ton early in the 39th over and then made hay adding another 26 in the final ten balls for a partnership of 115 and a personal tally of 127 not out in a total of 176 for 3 (40 overs). Jordan ended on a valuable 23 not out, causing Jai later to be dubbed 'pad-rash Patel' in the pub having waited in vain for 18 overs in expectation of a bat.
By the time tea was over the rain had worsened, the run-ups were slippery and all 22 players including one very relieved groundsman could see that it would be impossible to continue and the match was duly abandoned.
