Match report
PURLEIGH TOT UP A WIN AGAINST GREAT TOTHAM
A lost toss and fielding first was not such a big deal in weather that while still humid, was more forgiving than that of recent weeks.
Despite bowling the first few overs without eleven players on the field due to bad traffic on the A12, Purleigh bowlers Melvin John and Matt Oliver kept things really tight, Totham only scoring 20 in the first ten overs, not conceding a boundary until the seventh. Totham's steady start was disrupted in twelfth over when Matt produced a beauty to clip the off stump and bowl S. Pearson for 11, hitting the timber again next ball with another great swinging delivery to send the no.3 back for a golden duck. Next over the other opener slapped a Jai Patel delivery into the covers, only for Jordan Oliver to swoop low to make a great diving catch. New batters J. Chadwick and K. Mays, who scored a match-winning ton in the away fixture, upped the scoring rate with a series of fours. But Matt removed Mays with a lovely full, dipping yorker that beat the bat and hit off stump. In the 19th over Jordan took a second good catch, this time off Shahid, as Purleigh rung the changes in the bowling attack to be on top at drinks with Totham on 74-5 after 22 overs. After drinks, Chadwick dispatched some loose deliveries and hoicked four sixes but raised Melvin John's hackles in the 33rd over by walking down the wicket and smacking a four, only to be bowled for 86 next ball by a quicker one from the experienced Purleigh paceman. Next over Alex Reeves stood firm to claim a caught and bowled off a skyer to leave Totham on 168 for 8. From here the scoring rate slowed as the boundaries dried up, Melvin hitting the stumps again in the 39th over before Shahid did the same in the 41st to end the innings on 185 after a much-improved, although not faultless, Purleigh bowling and fielding performance.
The normal leisurely Purleigh tea followed, with the Totham lads back in the middle well before batters Chris Freegard and Steve Rynn. A decent set of five opening overs from Totham's young bowlers kept the score below 20 but the sixth went for 12 to put the home side well on track at 31 for 0. G Davis made a deserved breakthrough in the seventh over, inducing Steve to nick off for 7. Andy Bowles joined the skipper at the crease and the pair went about their business as good batsmen do, keeping out the good balls while not missing many opportunities to hit bad ones for four. The score progressed at around five runs an over, rising to more than six an over by drinks, 139 for 1 at 22 overs with both batters having passed 50 and Bowles at one point had briefly overtaken Freegard. Whatever was in the batsmen's drinks should be brought out again next game, as the fireworks really started after the resumption. Over number 23 went for a standard 5 runs but for over number 24 the field came up to tempt the batters to hit over the top. Challenge taken, four sixes and a four resulted and with the skipper back on strike next over after a Bowles single, the next three balls all went for four to give Purleigh a convincing nine-wicket win with the star batsman 97 not out, and partner Bowles 58 not out, the club regaining second place in the league table.
Other results mean its all to play for next week, when mathematically Purleigh could end as champions or indeed finish outside the promotion places.
