Match report PURLEIGH CROSS A BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER BUT TO NO AVAIL

The Purleigh team assembled at Rayne CC aiming to avoid any mention of the early-season home fixture and its unexpected and unwarranted consequences, fortunately Rayne's complaints stayed firmly in the past and the sound of silence reigned on that front. Sadly there was no mother and child reunion for regular spectator Marlene as Chris Freegard had opted to take an unmissable opportunity to go fishing.

Stand-in skipper Jai Patel won the toss but chose to field first even though on paper at least, Purleigh's batting looked slightly stronger than the bowling. For the second week running a catch was unfortunately dropped in the first over bowled by Melvin John, and Rayne got off to a bit of a flyer reaching 50 after 9 overs. Keeper Ed Oliver decided that age was catching up with him and risked being outed on the 'That's So Village' twitter feed by opting to wear his helmet standing back, having nearly taken a vicious second bounce in the face but it went for an early four byes instead. The wily Shahid made the breakthrough in his second over, pinning opener Mehboob lbw. Jai Patel soon bettered this with two wickets in his second over, aided by a trademark sharp catch at cover by Brad Barrick, followed by an excellent yorker. With the removal of skipper Ali for a second ball duck (and very possibly a first ball one to boot), Purleigh were feelin' groovy at 84 for 4 after 18 overs. But M. Ayres and no.3 Sheppard added a vital 135 for the fifth wicket, not parted until Jai bowled Sheppard for 70 in the 40th over at 217 for 5. Despite Patel doing something so right, hitting the stumps twice more to end with 6 for 47, late hitting and Purleigh's lack of a fifth front-line bowler sent the innings slip slidin' away as 68 runs were added in the last five overs, Rayne ending on 279-9.

A leisurely tea was something to keep the Purleigh customer satisfied, after which Steve Rynn and Josh Taylor opened the batting. Sadly nobody stood up to play the anchor role and say 'I am a Rock' as wickets tumbled with grim regularity and no partnership of any note was constructed in the face of mostly accurate bowling and very good fielding. Jai Patel used his bright eyes to hit four fours in one late over which did secure a second batting point but its probably the less said the better for the second week running as the innings ended on 176 all out, as the Purleigh players were homeward bound, but we will go again next week, still crazy after all these years.
